Rich, such a beautiful tribute to your father. I knew Dick Olson as Uncle Dick, a kind and compassionate man married to my Aunt Deen. Uncle Dick always had a big smile and kind words for all. He was one of the gentlest people I have ever known. I am thankful for the love and companionship he had for Aunt Deen. I believe they were made for each other, God certainly knew what he was doing. Richard D. Olson was my beloved Grandad. We shared countless fantastic memories together from visiting Great Falls to sharing living room conversations about adventures or every-day life, to playing a game of Hearts or croquet, to talking about writing projects, and many other activities. When I first told Grandad and Grandma Deen about my friend Daniel, they listened with interest. Later when we were engaged and then married, they welcomed him with open arms into the family. We enjoyed MANY wonderful visits on Sunday afternoons, eating a buffet lunch and watching ballgames. Grandad also loved our two children, enjoying playing ball with our daughter and letting our littlest grasp his finger. Our daughter often said, "Grandad loves me!" We are blessed and grateful to have lived close enough to share so many special times together, and we are grateful for the great gift of having him in our lives! I miss him a lot and will continue to miss him every year especially during the the time when we used to share our birthday celebrations together. I love you, Grandad, thank God for you, and am so glad you are in Heaven, where we will be together again some day! I am very grateful for the joy Dick brought to my mother-in-law Deen, and for the steady presence within our family. He and I spent a wonderful afternoon together about a year ago. Doug and I shared photos from our trip to Scotland and Ireland, and then, after Dick showed interest in modifying one for his book cover, he and I worked together for a long time to get the image right. He also told stories of his travels to Alaska and beyond, we got out the Atlas, and marveled at his adventures. We all had so much fun that afternoon!

i am so grateful to Dick for opening his heart and his home to me and all of my family. But the thing I am most grateful for is his partnership with my mother, Ila Deen; he made her feel loved, happy, and secure. He was such a good man and they were good together.

I am one of the "close knit" Ross family that became entwined with Dick Olson when he married our mother in 1993. We were so glad that they found each other and to have Dick in all of our lives. I knew some of the interesting things of his life but I am so grateful for Richie's biography that enlightens all of us about so many other things that we never knew about! Dick was wonderful for our mom, it gave her somebody to take care of and to share her life with. Somehow, he was able to turn her into an avid Baltimore Orioles fan which was amazing to all of the Ross boys who remember rooting for the hapless Washington Senators in the 1960's and our mom not giving a hoot about baseball. They took regular walks together in the morning for years that helped to keep them both fit and alert and they went to many of our family events as well as accepting us as visitors at their apartment in Asbury Village. Dick was always calm and thoughtful but he was Grandpa Olson to all of our children and he would always have a smile when our children and grandchildren would come for a visit. I know that Dick will be greatly missed by our mom and by all of us but we are grateful to have had him as a part of our lives and we will celebrate his amazing life along with the rest of his family and friends while always holding those memories of him dear to our hearts. Richard D. Olson Born on May 26th, 1921, in Hollywood Hospital, in the city of Los Angeles, California, “Dick Olson” as he later became to be known, was the second son of proud parents Elizabeth(Betty) P. Olson and Clarence Alfred Olson. Dick’s older brother, Jerry C. Olson, was already four years old when he came into the world. Growing up in Sunny Southern California, Dick was a true “Angelino”, as the family lived in several different rental homes around the Hollywood, Los Feliz and near-Downtown Los Angeles area neighborhoods. Finally purchasing a house in Riverside California, by the time Dick was in high school. Early on Dick’s great interest and budding passion, for the alluring and inspiring high mountains of the San Bernardino Mountain Range, as well as other local mountains, including the Santa Monica Mountains of Malibu drew him out and into the wilds – at the time of the 1930’s, these were still quite wild lands. Dick grew into the full-on mountaineer and mountain climber, hiker and trekker as he came into young adulthood – progressing to backpacking and climbing the High Sierra Mountains – quite literally, Dick Climbed (“Summited”) 31 peaks over 13,000 feet high, in only 17 days… among many other similar and even more awe-inspiring feats! We naturally began talking about Dick, through the eyes of his passion. I believe it was Richard’s passion, which truly inspired and developed all other areas of his entire life. Most notably and first to discover, his desire to write, to be an author of extraordinary stories and tales, of extraordinary men and women, much of which he would draw from his own life experiences, and his friends and family. Starting out writing magazine and other publication articles and such, short stories, and for the purpose of making a living, editing, Dick studied English in College, at UCLA in Los Angeles, and would write about the Mountains. Then, in 1941, a “Time” which will remain in infamy, Dick enlisted in the Army Air Corps, as did many other young men of “The Greatest Generation”. While many, maybe even, ALL, of the other pilot training cadets in Dick’s class never returned from their combat missions in the South Pacific, Dick, with the Long Arm of Providence stretched across, was stationed in the Army Training Administration, due… to his special talent and experience as a writer! And as such, and with the deepest gratitude and respect for ALL of the veterans who have served to protect our great nation, perhaps is the leading reason we are able to read this story of Richard D. Olson’s life today, in the year 2015, 94 years after he was born. After WWII, Dick embarked on many new adventures in his life – starting his own business with a good friend, repairing, and building, homes, up and down the California coast, including one in Cambria Pines. By the turn of the next decade, and from the referral of his cousin Bob (Robert) P. Bryson, who was a physicist who happened to work with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Dick found his way to none less than Alaska! He began to work for Uncle Sam, in the Field Survey Branch of the USGS, escorting, packing in and cooking for, teams of young geologists researching the Alaskan Northern Frontier, for minerals and oil and such. Dick and his teams of scientists would fly by bush plane, scamper in “Weasels” (Army Surplus Amphibious Landing craft with Tank Treads!) across the Tundra, and truly wild, vast, unexplored and extremely rugged Brooks Range mountains of northern most Alaska. It was here where Dick cemented the bond of lifelong friendship with Bush Pilot (and also USGS field survey team member) Fred Johnson – Fred and Dick shared many adventures together and each on their own, to last many lifetimes worth of grand stories. And as one twist of fate, inevitably leads to another, by which only our creator, and heavenly father can see the whole picture thereof… it was also through the USGS that Dick met his (first) wife to be, Annabel Brown. Annabel was a Geologist, working a desk job at the time, at the US Geological Survey headquarters in Washington, D.C. And probably somewhat to the “dismay of Richard at the time, he was also sent to Washington, D.C. for that summer of 1952, instead of going on another daring expedition to the great northern lands. Well as they say, God knows best! And Dick’s life changed forever, trading in the quests for the wilderness, and all of their great mystery’s, for and even greater mystery – Marriage! Dick and Annabel were married in 1954, and settled into Annabel’s then (and previous) childhood and family home of 5207 Wilson Lane, Bethesda, Maryland. Of course Annabel did not come alone – she was a package deal – and provided perhaps even the Greatest adventure any man can ever be blessed to have – a Family! Peter, Annabel’s son, was only four years old when Dick and Peter became father and son. Now, Richard D. Olson may be married, have the responsibility of raising a family, but none of that was going to slow him down too much – Maturing into God’s true plan for his life, Dick used his God given talent and also passion, as a writer, to become his life long career. Working for the National Science Foundation, writing and editing their prestigious journals, Dick was now off to the far OTHER Ends of the World... Antarctica! Spending an Southern Hemisphere summer at (and/or near) the South Pole, documenting the scientists working there in some of the most extreme conditions on Earth. As the Olson family grew, Dick and Annabel purchased a beautiful piece of the Virginia countryside, lovingly known as “the Farm” (sans any farm animals or crops). Peter and Dick spent many a fun filled weekend at the farm, and dreamed of many great futures to come. By 1962, along came Richie, child, son, number two. Now one would expect most men, and families to be even further entrenched in the domestic needs and routine of a two child family life… Oh not Dick Olson! Dick soon moved to a senior editor position at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and Annabel continued at the USGS. Now one of the maybe not so widely realized benefits of being an US Government employee is (drum roll - Vacation time. Yes, “Leave” as it were, accrues with one’s “GS “X” ranking, and years of service, and we have two long time GS14-ers or somewhere thereabouts, and that meant even one month or longer, of summer vacations. Remember Dick’s adventurous side? Now summers were spent right back into the Wild West of America, up in the high Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada’s of California, and anyplace where “Seldom is heard…” the voice of other human beings. Dick brought with him his early life’s passion for the wilderness, mountains and all that is in them, and he introduced and immersed those amazing and incredible places, which video games and TV cannot even begin to impersonate, into the lives of his two son’s Peter and Richie. Now, as time passes, Children grow up and go off to college, and leave home for good, Dick had the opportunity presented to take an early retirement from his, albeit very good, editorial job at NRL. This also meant for him, that he could have the chance to truly follow his original lifelong passion, to be an author, a writer in his own right, writing his own path forward. So, in 1977, Dick jumped on this moment to seize the day, and write the Novels he has been fomenting in his mind and soul for so many years. The first of which, originally titled, “Toward No Earthly Pole” was begun immediately. This was to be the - part factual and biographical, part fictional and dramatic - story of the life and explorations of the British Arctic explorer, Sir John Franklin, and his search for the fabled and famed Northwest Passage. Much like the Epic and true life expeditions across the arctic tundra and frozen seas of the arctic oceans, Dick’s quest to write and complete this, also Epic, novel, took almost as many years! Just about 20 years from start to finish. During the vast and in-depth research which was made, Dick (with 16 year old Richie along for the ride) took off across Canada, tracing the very steps Sir John Franklin took on his over-land journeys of exploration, all the way to above the arctic circle by bush float-plane, to become the first humans to set foot at the ruins of Franklin’s Fort Enterprise, perhaps in more than 150 years (?). Well good things take time is absolutely true and good, and Dick did publish, under the title of “Turnagain” that very novel in 2007. Now, to further elucidate the years of post-career at NRL, beginning the more solitary life of a true writer, at home, and with his family world changing, in 1992 Annabel passed onto the Lord in Heaven, at the age of 70. Dick was 71 years old, Peter had been long gone from the home, married for twenty some years to his wife Roxy, Richie was off to university in Colorado and then further west to a new life in California. So Dick was alone – all alone after 38 years married with Annabel – in a way he probably had never imagined before. Fortunately Peter and family lived at “the Farm” nearby in Virginia at this time, and Richie came home for the winter to comfort and help his dear father. But, yet again, the warm, kind and forever loving arm of the Lord was at hand, and gently nudged the sweet and compassionate lady who lived next door – Deen Ross - right into Dick’s life. One year later, in the fall of 1993, Deen and Dick were married, and yet another, new life began. This time, the next chapter in the “Dick Olson Book of Life” was a time of personal, social and inter-personal growth. Where the solitude of the writer’s den was now replaced by the open doors of friends and new people, activities and “Life”! You see, Deen came with a large family, how else can it be said? And her family had bonded and united and happened to mostly reside in and around the local Washington Maryland and Virginia area – they were close knit. So now Dick all of a sudden had a big, happy, outgoing and close knit family. Turn the page and Dick opened up like a butterfly from his cocoon, and a new man from within emerged, much to his own and all of our, delight. In 1999 Dick sold the Wilson Lane house in Bethesda (He and Annabel had sold the Farm some years before), and he and Deen moved into “Asbury Methodist Village” in Gaithersburg, Maryland – a “Seniors Disneyworld” of sorts. Next, and in a bit faster paced effort, Dick’s next and second full length book, novel, this time all fictional, “After the Plane Crashed” was begun, with a renewed zest and interest. Now, as was the case with his first major writing venture, and even more so in his new book, Dick would draw heavily from his own, many, varied and exceptional life experiences. He would develop characters from his family life, and then he would do more research than the best Hollywood Movie studio could even dream to achieve, in finding the real life and facts of the subjects which he would write about. But most of all, above and beyond all of these key, core and fundamental elements any real, or great author or writer must have to be able to write a decent story, Dick used his amazing, multicolored, deep and mesmerizing imagination – an imagination which was Dick’s – Richard D. Olson – very soul. Richard D. Olson, young adventurer, mountaineer, explorer, loner (in a good way), writer, career man, family man, novelist… father. So many men was Dick Olson, but most of all, the one thing any person who ever met Dick will say – he was beautiful man, he had a heart of gold, and his smile of true happiness beamed – true happiness, genuine happiness – to each and every one he smiled upon. “After the Plane Crashed” was completed just a matter of weeks before Dick made his final voyage, on a “Yacht”, in fact, a Yacht he said he had seen coming to take him on his way home, to Jesus, the night before he passed. Dick’s granddaughter Kara Lee Olson (with a small assist by Richie Olson) completed the full first/rough edition printing of the book “After the Plane Crashed” and presented it to Dick, on the eve of his 94th Birthday, May 26th, 2015 – Dick was happy. A life completed a life worth living, a life well done. The one and only thing Dick would wish for each and all of us – is that we are HAPPY.

I have known Dick Olson since, I believe, 1953 when I first met him in the Arctic at a habitat called Umiat, Alaska. Dick did the adventuresome things that I only wished to do: roaming the Brooks Range, flying a Norseman to very remote places – later leading to a bad crash while taking off on floats... Dick recently wrote a very good book entitled, “Turnagain, Discovering the Northwest Passage”. We miss you, Dick.
