Nancy Ann Whitney passed away peacefully at her home in Beaufort, S.C. on Friday, March 21, 2014. Nancy was 82.
She was born in Columbus, Ohio on December 9, 1931 to the late Mr. Lavern G. Whitney and Mrs. Elsie English Whitney. Nancy lived in Piqua, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana before moving to Arlington, Va. in 1939. She moved to Hilton Head Island, S.C. after retirement, but moved back to Va. in 2007 in the care of her special friend and private nurse, Betty Jo Woodroof. Her home for the last two years was in Beaufort, S.C. where she resided with Betty Jo and Gordon Woodroof.
Nancy attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. and the University of Va. where she received a bachelor’s degree. She received a master’s degree in education from Maryland University.
She taught school in Arlington, Va. for 34 years at Jamestown and Long Branch Elementary Schools. She was a devoted school teacher. There was no limit to what she was willing to do for her class including field trips to historic sites, often at her own expense.
Nancy was a member and faithfully attended Triangle Baptist Church in Triangle, Va. until health issues made her home bound. Many close and cherished friendships were formed at Triangle Baptist Church.
In her free time, she enjoyed traveling both domestically and internationally with her close friends.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Lavern G. and Elsie English Whitney, her brother, James Whitney, and her cousins Jeanette Leines and Robert English.
She is survived by her first cousin, Marion Watson, the living husband of a deceased cousin Jeanette Leines, T.A. Leines, second cousins, John Watson, Danie Watson, Lisa Watson, Ted Leines, Gail English, Susan English, Ann Hemming, and Kathy Martin. She is also survived by her dearest friends Eugenia Kizer, Mary Pearson, and numerous other lifelong friends, and a foster daughter, Susan Messersmith.
Nancy’s beautiful smile and her universal kindness to all will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her. She will live forever in the hearts of all her friends.
Visitation: Thursday; April 3, 2014, 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Arlington Funeral Home Chapel, 4510 Wilson Blvd. Arlington, Va..

Funeral Service: Thursday, April 3, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at Arlington Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Wayne Colton officiating.
Interment will follow in Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
