December 28, 1930 – April 30, 2025
Maureen Ellen Camunas, formerly of Portland, Maine, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, surrounded by the family she so dearly loved.
Born in Portland on a winter’s day in 1930, Maureen was the cherished daughter of Almas T. Kenny and Helen Oaks. Raised in a lively Irish Catholic household, she was one of eight siblings: Elaine Hibbard, Beverly Gower, Merrill Kenny, Walter Kenny, Ann Merrill, Peter Kenny, and John Kenny.
From a young age, Maureen’s spirit of resilience and devotion shone brightly. As a teenager, she babysat, worked in a fish canning factory, and waitressed in a local diner as a way to support both herself and her family.
One enchanted evening at a dance with friends, a young, handsome sailor named Enrique Camunas (Chico) asked her to dance and in that moment, swept her off her feet and into a lifelong love. With the help of her sister Elaine, Maureen secretly eloped with Enrique on September 12, 1949, beginning a marriage rooted in passion, partnership, and adventure.
Together, they built a beautiful life and raised four beloved children: Cynthia Joan (1950, Portland, ME), Kathleen Marie (1951, Portland, ME), Joseph Enrique (1956, San Juan, PR), and Michael Edward (1961, Groton, CT). As a proud military wife, Maureen supported Enrique’s service in the U.S. Coast Guard with steadfast strength. Their journey took them across the country and beyond — from Charleston and Miami, to San Juan, Puerto Rico and Groton — before settling in Garden Grove, California, where they spent their golden years living next door to their treasured daughter Cynthia, filling their home with laughter, joy, and warmth.
Maureen had a heart for connection and a passion for life’s simple joys. She was a lifelong sports enthusiast, and none more loyal than her devotion to baseball. For 38 years, she proudly worked as a concessionaire and lead at Angel Stadium, where she became a beloved part of the ballpark family and she was a familiar face whose kindness touched thousands.
She found joy in afternoon books, long, heartfelt conversations with her sisters across the miles, and sharing a glass of sangria with those she loved most. But above all, Maureen’s deepest joy was her family. She was the heart of five generations as a devoted mother, adoring grandmother to 15, and great-grandmother to 22. She gave her love generously through home-cooked meals, warm hugs, quiet understanding, and unwavering support.
Her legacy is one of grace, strength, laughter, and unconditional love. Though she has left this world, her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew her. Finally, after 8 long and sad years apart, she is reunited with the love of her life, Enrique, where they will spend eternity dancing together at last.
She will be deeply missed, and forever remembered and loved.
