Peter was born on October 21, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois to Elizabeth Bellemore and John Freeman Carter and grew up in Chicago and Indiana. He graduated from Sullivan High School and spent his freshman year of college at Auburn University where he pledged Sigma Chi. After the death of his father, he transferred to Indiana State University and graduated with a Bachelors in Chemistry. In 1964 he met Susan Maxheim and they were married in 1966 in Torrance, California, where both of their children, Elizabeth Greer and John Miles were born. His entire career was in aerospace working for McDonald Douglas and Northrup Grumman, retiring in 1992. During his years at Northrup, he received an executive MBA from Anderson UCLA Graduate School of Business Management. Peter was proud of his professional life, but passionate about his lifelong community involvement. He was an active member of the Garden Grove Kiwanis, Garden Grove Strawberry Festival, Masked Ball Chapter of the Orange County Performing Arts Center, CHOC (one of the founders of the CHOC Walk), Bobby Sox Softball and Garden Grove Elks among others. He served on the 2001-2002 Orange County Grand Jury and was the Garden Grove Man of the Year in 1988. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Milburn and son Miles. He is survived by his wife Susan, daughter Greer, son-in-law Anthony Contreras, Grandsons Anthony Jr and Ethan Contreras, great- grandson Ace Contreras, daughter- in -law Charina Carter and grandson Cyle Carter, brother Joe and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the CHOC Walk or Kiwanisland.
