

Cynthia “Cindy” Ann (Benfield) Childress went to her heavenly home on Tuesday June 7, 2022. She passed peacefully at the Robin Johnson Hospice House in Dallas, NC. Cindy was born in Gastonia on August 16, 1942. Cindy loved Jesus and when she was younger, she was a Sunday School teacher for children. Cindy loved her family and she was especially focused on raising her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was instrumental in their care. Cindy was also focused on her health and she loved to exercise. She could be found at the gym every day. She also enjoyed doing crafts. She is well loved and she will be dearly missed by many.
Cindy is the daughter of the late Elizabeth Ola (Smith) Benfield and Steven Howard Benfield. Her beloved husband, Braxton Lee Childress, preceded her in death in 1996.
Cindy leaves behind her daughter, Debbie Carver and her son, Michael Childress and his significant other, Melinda. Missing their grandmother are her grandchildren, Matthew Burns, Brett Carver, Nicholas Carver, and Ashleigh Childress. Cindy’s legacy includes her great-grandchildren, Jordan Burns, Chloe Burns and Adalyn Smith. Her siblings, sister Bonnie Batts and her husband Dan and brother, Steven Benfield are also grieving the loss of their sister. Cindy also leaves behind a number of nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating the Cindy’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday June 13, 2022 in the Cardinal Hall at Carothers Funeral Home, 2205 Williamsburg Drive, Gastonia, NC. The family will receive friends before the service beginning at 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow the Celebration of Life Service at Gaston Memorial Park. Reverend Roger Overton will officiate and offer words of encouragement and hope to family and friends that gather to remember Cindy. Kenny Mace, Nicholas Carver, Brett Carver, Preston Richardson, Michael Childress and Jordan Burns will serve as the pallbearers.
