Dicie Kiser Elliott, 85, passed into Heaven surrounded by the family on Saturday, March 5, 2016 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Dicie was born in Bessemer City, NC and raised by her grandparents.
She was married to the late Hugh Walter Elliott in 1951. They had four children whom Mrs. Elliott raised alone after the death of Hugh in 1959.
After graduation from Tryon High School, she worked for Sterchi Brother’s Furniture in Gastonia. Several years later she joined the payroll department of Parkdale Mills where she worked and retired after a total of 42 years of service.
Dicie grew up on a farm so her “green thumb” was present and showed in the flowers and shrubs she grew in her yard and shared with friends and family. She was a former member of the Master Gardner’s Association and Lucille Tatum Home Extension Club. While her children were young she served for many years as President of the Myrtle School PTA. She also served as President and in other capacities in several Senior Citizens Clubs and Church sponsored Senior groups. She was a fundraiser as well as a long term contributor to the Battered Women’s Shelter, Boys and Girls Clubs, Heart Association, March of Dimes, Veterans Of Foreign Wars Association, Baptist Children’s Home of NC, Cancer Society, St. Jude’s Hospital and the St. Labre Indian School in Montana.
Through the years, Mrs. Elliott, enjoyed traveling with her Senior Club members as well as with other friends and family. Some of her travels took her to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, the Virgin Islands, Canada, Panama, British Columbia and the Southwest and Midwest of the United States.
Survivors include her son Randy Hugh Elliott and wife Valerie of Columbia SC; daughters Sherry Phillips and husband Charles of Dallas, NC; Carolyn Barnes and husband Steve of Gastonia; Denise Carpenter of Clover, SC.; and much loved Patricia Elliott of Gastonia. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers and are: David and Johnathon Elliott, Sergeant Chris Phillips US Army, Matthew Phillips, Jeffery and Blake Barnes along with Martin Bockinski. Her granddaughters are Melissa Carpenter and Heather Bochinski and Emily Phillips. Twelve great-grandchildren also bless her family.
Dicie was generous, loving, caring and always willing and available to help those in need. Her words were kind and advice was sound. She was a strong and courageous woman. She was Mama, Mamaw Dicie and Great Mamaw. We were so fortunate to have her for so long to guide us through life.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 10, 2016, at 2pm at Carother’s Funeral Home on South New Hope Road in Gastonia. The funeral service will be in the Carother’s Chapel at 3:00pm with burial to follow at Gaston Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family would like to express thanks to the staff at Terrace Ridge ALC where Mrs. Elliott resided with special appreciation to Stevie; to the entire hospice staff with special recognition to Jeanie Davis for her comfort, care and guidance; and to Dr’s James Costner and Dr. Sunil Mehta for their long term care and concern.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Dicie, may be sent to the charity of your choice.
