A few years later. I thought that I would put this on your Obituary rather than going to your grave and talking to the grass at which you were buried. Papaw, you were the best grandpa ever. I never ever would've asked for anyone to have the role that you did in my life. You were a lot of things to me: a father figure, a grandfather, and a best friend. I remember some things that you probably may or may not think I remember, like whenever Mamaw would get home from work, I would hide under your blanket at the end of your couch, and Mamaw would act like she couldn't see me but of course she could, but I didn't know back then. I was probably only about 5 or 6. Now, I'm 15. After numerous amounts of years with you, you passed away when I was 11. It is and was the hardest thing I will ever have to deal with in my life. It affected me greatly. You were the best human being that I will ever find to have lived, or live on this earth. There was no one like you. I also remember you'd drive me to the snack store down the road, in your wonderful red Ford Ranger, and you'd buy me a pack of M&M's. I remember we would sit on the steps in front of the door and you'd smoke your cigarettes and look at the sky, and look at the birds flying around and I'd come sit right beside you. Over the last many months of your life, you lost a lot of weight and you got so skinny to where you could see your veins. You lost pretty much all of your hair, even though you didn't have very much to begin with, and even then I would still play with your nubby fingers that you lost half of in the fire when you were younger. As the last days went by, you're eyes begin to shut, and you began to sleep different. You would sleep with your mouth wide open and one of your eyes was basically half open, and that's when I could tell you were dying, but I was just 11, I didn't ever think about death before, especially the death of you. That would've been the last thing on my mind. I got home and immediately began talking to my parents and I remember telling them exactly that I wanted you to live 15 more years so you could see me get married and become successful. But of course, 3 days later, you were gone, and my whole world came tumbling down right beneath my toes. My parents had come to my school, I was in 6th grade, and they brought me into the office one of the administrators, and the funny thing was, the administrator wasn't even in there. I got 5 words, "Rebekah, your Papaw is gone." That's all I needed to just break down, to just fall apart right there in my Daddy's arms. I spent the whole beginning time that you were gone, being strong for other people and not doing anything for myself. Eventually, it finally hit me that I would never hear your voice again, or see you again in person, or hear your laugh so hard that you cough, or smile, or me ask you, "Papaw, what's my name?" because you had Alzheimer's and the last thing I wanted was for you to forget my name. But, you would always say, "Puddintang, ask me again, and I'll tell you the same." Eventually, you would always end up remembering my name and telling me. It was so fun growing up with you beside me. You were everything a grand-daughter could need, want, and so much more. Papaw, I know that if you'd see the person I have become that you would be highly disappointed, and you would tell me to get my act straight fast. But, then I begin to think, and my mind starts wandering. Would I be like this if you were still here, or would I be the same little girl that you knew and loved so much? See, there was one thing that I will never forget or take for granted about you Papaw, and that is the unconditional love you had for me. You showed me what real love looks like, and what a true connection was. I promise there will never be another man in my life that I will ever love even remotely as close to how much I loved you, now our love was a different kind of love, it was a family love. If I could see you today, I'd ask you how you've been, what's heaven like, if you saw any of your brothers, sisters, parents, or other family members, if you liked it up there in heaven, if you had been looking down upon me the whole time, and of course, lastly, I would like to ask, Papaw, what's my name? I love you. I always will. There will never be another Jerry Lee Rushing, not even close. 

Jerry was a good man.  He was humble, always making you laugh, a joy to be around. I will miss him! All my love, Bev

I am so sorry for my Mammaw and Uncle David and my father, Brian Rushing! He will be so missed. If you didn't join the funeral here is what it was like. It was a moment of sadness and suffering. My grandma, Alice Rushing has been hurting. This is a time for grief and pain. It is okay to cry, it is okay to feel pain. He is in a better place now. He is with god and he gets to see family members he hasn't seen in a long time. These people include, Uncle Ward, his mom, his dad, and my cousin Ryan Rushing. He gets to see these people again. He is no longer in pain. He will be missed though. Missed very much. I am praying for the whole Rushing family. Especially his wife, my grandmother, Alice Rushing.

I love you uncle Jerry.  Coming home will never be the same without your jokes, smiles and stories.

"For this day, you shall be in paradise"!

To all the rushings I wanna say the whole entire lingerfelt family is praying for you all during this time!! Love you David!

I am so sorry for your loss Mrs. Rushing! I adored you and your husband and enjoyed getting to know you both. He was a PRECIOUS man and I have missed him being around since the day you left our floor and then the hospital. I hope you are doing well and getting along ok since his passing, I am sure he is watching over you now. He will be missed VERY much so!

I will always consider Jerry my brother. We shared so many years together hunting and enjoying the outdoors. Here's to you uncle, I will miss you always.

Jerry was the best neighbor in the world and life long family friend. You will truly be missed.

My prayers are with Alice, Bernice, David and all of Jerry's wonderful family. He was the best neighbor ever and quite a character! I will miss him so much sitting outside his house watching my house for me. He sure did a great job of that and it is much appreciated. To meet Jerry was to love him. And I do.
