Raymond's first professional job was at Peter G Appling High School in Macon, Georgia. He rented a room in the home of my then mother-in-law. In the meantime, I was in charge of the school library.  He was a very strict professional who developed a fine instrumental music program at the school as well as a Class A band. Students admired him as well as did his co-workers . I was sorry when I heard that he left Appling for " greener pastures"        Libby Scobell


The Jordans were our neighbors for many years in North Carolina. For so long we did not know their first names, for out of respect, my children simply knew them as Mr. and Mrs. Jordan. A respect that was more than deserved. We are saddened to hear of Mr. Jordan's crossing into Heaven. We are also honored that daughter, Audrey took the time to share their loss with us,  all the way from North Carolina to Tennessee. The elegance and beauty of Mr. and Mrs. Jordan has surely fallen to his children. Mrs. Jordan and family, "You are in our thoughts and prayers. Will always love the Jordans." My thoughts and prayers go out to the Jordan family.   Mr. Jordan was a major part of my high school experience, and I really enjoyed being in his bands.

Mr. Jordan had a marked influence on my early years, and by inference my life.  The focus and discipline instilled by him  and modeled by  him laid a most clear path.   My journey began by  learning to play the snare drum in the library, being a mascot with Tony Tharpe and and playing the baritone with Ennis Harvey and the student Gray.  A ten  point topical summary  of my memories follow: Mumbo beat [I would love to have the music or a rendition]; Eight to five; Step forward back turn; Back in the hole; Band, take the field; Hold that note, and then triple tongue; Look sharp, be sharp, is sharp [with the right arm pointed forward, shoulder level];  Always given an intelligent response; and a piece from the concert band - Fingal's Cave.  Section H was so long for the baritone section.  The attached photo shows my sister Careta and other band members.

       I am sorry for the loss of your husband, Raymond. I remember how much he meant to East Gaston and Ashbrook students whom were under him in band. He was an awesome instructor that is solely missed by so many. 
       I was one that when I was out with my mother would happen to see you and Raymond at Ryan's or Golden Corral from time to time. 
      I am sad for you Bobbie and your family. Know that I am keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time in your life. I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Jordan's passing.  I attribute my Air Force Band career to this great musical leader and instructor. At the end of my Junior year in 1980, I was done with band.  I was very discouraged and ready to quit.  It hurt my heart to quit, because I loved making music so much, but couldn't stand putting myself through another year of the current director.  I won't say who.  
But the clouds parted and we heard there was to be a new director at Ashbrook that Fall.  I became very excited about the possibilities and immediately changed my mind.  If I had anything to do with it, I was determined to do everything in my power to help the Band achieve the new director's vision, whatever that might be.  It had to be better, right?  I eagerly waited for Mr. Jordan to arrive.  When we finally met, I told him I was there for him, whatever he needed.  He said he needed some Tuba players.  Well, I was a Flute Player, but had taught myself the Bassoon, so I could read the Bass Clef.  He offered to give me Tuba lessons over the Summer and it was at those 3x's a week lessons that I heard many of Mr. Jordan's catchphrases that endeared him to me and all the band members.   The rest of the year was fantastic.  He was exactly what the band program needed.  He always pushed us to the highest standard, which we always reached for and never completely achieved, because, we learned, you have to always push yourself to the next level.
In the Spring of 1981, Mr. Jordan gently suggested I should apply for the Coast Guard Academy, then later he got me a full scholarship to Wingate College.  Surprised me that anyone would do that.  I taught band 3 years at North Gaston High School after college and saw him a few times before I went into the Air Force Band.  I wouldn't be where I am today without his great influence.  He was my Band Father and I loved him for it.

To the family of Mr. Raymond Jordan 

You have my deepest sympathy in the passing of Mr. Jordan. I was one of his flutist in 
 the Kentucky State University Marching Thorobred Band in ‘75-‘76. I learned a lot from Mr. Jordan and I will forever remember his teaching. The memories are wonderful and they will be in my heart as I remember his voice saying “In the hole gang!”  Rest well Mr. Jordan. 💚💛🎵🎶

Mr. Jordan was a Great Band Director, Mentor and Friend. I had the Honor of playing for him with the Marching KSU Thorobred Band from  ‘72- ‘76. He demanded excellence from each member of the band in all aspects of Musicianship  and University life. While he worked us very hard, it more than paid off during our performances and in later life. The news of Mr. Jordan’s passing made me stop and give prayer his soul to rest in peace. His family provided loving support and appreciation to him I know this to be true because of the encouragement he provided to band students at Kentucky State University. I was fortunate to be in the K-State Band 1970-1974 but today being sad by the news as well as sending my heartfelt condolences to his family. His clear voice of over 5 decades ago still rings in my ears. We were an accomplished marching band under Mr. Jordan’s leadership. I know his family is so proud of his achievements. During my years as a clarinet player the Band marched in the ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition in the Dallas Cowboys Football Stadium. He took many of the students on their first airplane ride when playing as a featured band in the ‘Orange Bowl’ Parade in Florida. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio and my family and friends witnessed the band’s half-time performance at the Cincinnati Bengals Game that aired on television. One day Mr. Jordan selected me to become the featured vocalist for our half-time show and during recruitment tours to high schools. Our band was skillfully managed and our director brought out skills in us that were concealed through his challenging style of directing. We marched with knees bent, practiced until it was accurate, and loved being a member of the best band in the land. The band traveled to almost every game with the football team and experienced a rich knowledge of other college campuses. May his soul rest in heaven. His smile gave plenty of hope to finish our degrees at Kentucky State University as he planted in us the message ‘Esprit de Corps’ to excel in life. Mr. Jordan we thank you for being our treasured teacher and mentor.

We met at Kentucky State University in 1973 in the band. Mr Jordan was like a father figure to us and the rest of the band members. Mr Jordan taught and mentored students from all across the country bringing us together as a strong unit. Mr. Jordan worked hard instilling dignity and pride in all of us. He pushed us hard teaching us that we were good enough if not better.  Nothing less than our BEST was acceptable.  He often spoke of having “esprit de corps” and encouraged his students to “push and drive” in order to obtain our goals. He helped show us the pathway to success. Mr. Jordan taught us that“ if you are on time, you are late “; we continue to live by and repeat that saying.  Mr. Jordan influenced thousands of young people and we are proud to have had the opportunity to have served under his tutelage. Mr. Jordan was well respected and admired by those that were blessed to have crossed his path. He will be truly missed and fondly remembered.

My most happiest memories of high school were those spent in the P. G. Appling band in Macon, GA. Mr. Jordan was demanding but always had his band members backs. We were always so proud of our half time shows under Mr. Jordan's direction.  I am so sad to hear of his passing.  He was truly  a wonderful teacher and person.

I remember my Uncle Breeze to be a very caring, sharing, friendly man of God.  The Jordan family with often visit my grandmother's house in Macon, Georgia. My cousin Chris and I would swing on his arms as he would flex 💪and count to see how long he could hold us. This went on for some years until  we got to bit heavy to swing on his arms. I don't think he ever said we were too heavy but we just grew out of that game. When I started to show an interest  in the snare drum he got me a drum 🥁 to use and gave some pointers on tempo. He was very helpful in helping me understand practice was very important. I will always carry traits that reside in my heart of a great example of a man of God, husband,father,and uncle. Mr. Jordan was my band director at Ashbrook for my sophomore and junior years in 95 and 96.  Back in that time, I knew nothing about the great HBCU bands, but after I left Ashbrook and went to college I would see and hear those bands and I would always tell people that we were playing like that in high school. To this day, anybody that played football at Ashbrook will tell you they got absolutely jacked up when we played the drum cadence and marched into the stadium. That band had the character and discipline that Mr. Jordan taught us. When it came to the music and the product, he was all business and you better to what you’re supposed to do. Outside of the work on the performance, he loved you like you were one of his kids. He taught us all music but also taught us the values of respect, hard work, discipline, and yes, humor. The man could get on a roll laughing and saying his Jordanisms that I loved so much. He’d say, Jason, you like playing right? I’d say yes sir. He’d say well don’t fiddle around then, send it to the box! 

He was a truly great man and I know that the Lord has him “sending it to the box” in the heavenly instrumental section. 

I am deeply saddened by this news. I have often thought about him over the years. He was an excellent band director. I was under his supervision for all of my four years at East Gaston High School. His motivation even inspired me to play in the band at UNC-Chapel Hill for 4 years. It was an adjustment, to say the least. It was because of his direction that I persevered and stayed in the band. He gave me an experience of an HBCU which I did not get at UNC. For this, I will forever be grateful.


Mr. Jordan was the toughest band teacher ever! He was my director while I attended Ashbrook. I was the only female to play the sousaphone and he encouraged me to the fullest. Raymond Jordan you will definitely be missed! Class of 1995

I received the news today that Mr. Jordan had past away. My prayers go out to Ramona and the rest of the family. I was one of his students in the marching band at Ashbrook Class of 87. I was in the drum line. The first time I met him was the start of my sophomore year and it was the first day for drummers to report to go over our music and routine and I quickly realized what he wanted in me , hard work, dedication to the music and the band. He taught me other ways to play percussion and to broaden my talents at other instruments from snare, tympani's, Latin percussion and anything else I wanted to learn to play. During our halftime show one time I had twisted my ankle on a sprinkler head on the field. Mr. Jordan came up to me in a hurry and asked if I had two right feet. I replied to him and said no sir I have one left foot I left my right foot on the field. He looked at my swollen right foot and asked why I didn't step off and I told him you thought me better than that and the at the show must go on even when your out of step. I got a little smile but I no deep down he wanted to bust out laughing. I really respected him and because of his impact on me and music I still play today. I recently took up playing the Hammer Dulcimer and I thought of  him when I bought it that the desire to still wanting to learn and play music was because of him. Thanks to you Mr. Jordan the show will always go on in me and my son who plays percussion. Thank you Mr. Jordan Rest In Peace.

I am a previous student of Mr. Jordan's. He was my band teacher at Holbrook as well as Ashbrook. He was a very influential person in my life!! He is the only teacher I ever had who not only believed in me as a student but as a person as well! I was a student of Mr. Jordan back in the 60's. In Macon Bibb County  Ga. He was a good band director even when we couldn't get it right. I have often thought of him over the years.  To the family you have my deepest sympathy. 

I’m the mother of two students that are now grown, but had Mr. Jordan for band. They both ADORED him!  My daughter played clarinet and was drum major in her senior year.  My son played drums. Her grandmother made her costume and it was absolutely gorgeous.  It had gold instruments for buttons.  She was up in her years when she made it.  Mr. Jordan wanted her to make others but she said that  “this one was made with love and she couldn’t make any more.”   She really wanted to make them for him but her age wouldn’t let her.  He was a GREAT, Kind and Gentle man.  After they both graduated he was very observant and would speak to all of us when he saw us in public.  He would stand up and shake hands. He was always very concerned as to what they were doing in their lives going forward.  I truly believe that he loved what he did and put everything  he had into it.  He truly was a wonderful person and he will be forever missed.  He was one of a kind.  Rest In Peace our dear friend!!  The Murphy’s LOVE  you!

I am deeply sorry for the loss of Mr. Jordan. I was one of his band members at Peter G. Appling High School in Macon. His dedication, professionalism and tough spirit made us a truly great band. We always left the school festivals with straight superiors across the board. Our marching as well as our concert band were above reproach. He made us great! He was very tough but I loved him. What an impact he had on so many! I think the greatest compliment is he made people better. Perfection does not come cheap and to be better at something required work. Clear as mud? I am so sorry to hear of Mr Jordan's passing. I played the tuba at Ashbrook from 1986-1989 and look back very fondly of all my memories while in the band; especially during football season and parade time.  Tall, slim and stoic he would always press his solid white suits to the nines and would proudly march "his" band into whatever the engagement was.  Such as playing at a Ronald Regan/George Bush rally at Charlotte Douglas Airport (88) or striding down into the French Quarter in New Orleans during Mardi Gras (87) or leading us into the joyous Disney World in Orlando Florida on my Senior trip in 1989. And of course all the awesome Friday nights watching our Green Wave battle it out on the grid iron.   Mr Jordan was extremely proud of his group and the time we all put into being the best musicians we could; including the flag and rifle girls who adding their pageantry into whatever engagement we we at as well.  He had us prepared and ready at all times. I loved my time in the Ashbrook's band and all the friends I made and still chat with even today some 30+ years on. Mr. Jordan was my band director at East Gaston High School.  I have fond memories that I cherish to this day regarding the experiences I had as a band member.  He brought the best out of our performances and urged us toward excellence.  Because of his leadership and commitment to the band, many people came to the football games just to see the band perform.  He was a positive influence upon my life.

My family is so sadden to hear about the demise of Mr. Jordan.  We knew him when he directed our daughter in the Ashbrook band.  I consider Bobbie as a very good friend from our days at Third Street.  We hope and pray that his family will march down this path with heads held high knowing they did the best they could.

Mr Jordan was my music director the first year he was at East Gaston and i was his teachers aid as well. I only got to learn from him while i was rhere. He always spoke his opinion wether it was politically vorrect or not. He was a great teacher and will be missed.

Mr. Jordan had a profound impact on my life and that of my brother (Harold). We learned music and how to play the Tuba at Peter G. Appling High School, Macon, Ga. Under his direction, we became a multiple award winning band and lifelong lovers of music.

Mr. Jordan was one of a kind and that is what I admired about him. He helped you belive in yourself and push yourself to show the potential he knew you had in you. My best memories from high school are because of my connection with the band and all of the unique things about RPJ. I was fortunate to have been chosen to be his drum major for the band my junior and senior year, I'm so proud he chose me. Truly a great mentor, friend, teacher, instructor, and musician. Mr. Jordan was a awesome person and great band director at East Gaston. He never met a stranger. After my graduation from East Gaston in 1980 we remained friends. I can still hear him say "Yes me band." He will live on in my memories. Mrs. Jordan you and your family will be in my prayers. Mr. Jordan was the absolute best!!!

Prayers for the family of Mr. Jordan. I was one of so many band students that were privileged to have been taught by such a wonderful teacher.  I think of him often and have such memories  with the band.  He called my cornet a baby trumpet.  We had such pride as band students at East Gaston. He wrote out
 for each instrument the music  from popular songs. We marched into the stadium and did turns and pinwheels pre game and halftime. And we danced.  I was so shocked when he gave me first chair second trumpet and I kept it.  He made an impact on so many young people. Mr. Jordan will be missed but he will also be remembered by so many.

My sincerest condolences to your family. I had the honor to learn from the absolute best for 3 years at East Gaston. He was a character. He was tough but fair, he was funny, and he wanted us to be the very best. Summer band practice in the relentless heat was worth it all when he had us strutting our stuff on the field at halftime and had the fans up on their feet cheering! I've thought about him often through the years, enjoying the memories. I will be praying for God to hold you close during your time of loss and the days ahead. Rest in Peace, Mr. Jordan!

About midday today my phone started buzzing off the hook. Some old friends from high school were reaching out to let me (and others) know that Mr. Raymond P. Jordan had passed away. It has been fun swapping stories and memories with folks throughout the day, but one thing my friend Jay said really resonated with me. He said “he was a great teacher and most of us had no clue until we were long gone”. If any educator or coach in my impressionable teenage years taught me more life lessons than Mr. Jordan, I can’t name them. I was blessed with many great teachers and coaches, but this man was my “father figure” at school. He taught me the power of discipline, the power of “do it right Ware or don’t fool with it at all”. He instilled wisdom in some of his famous other sayings like “take your time and hurry up” and “is that clear as mud?”.  He had a tough exterior but I loved being able to crack him. I was a smart aleck that he tolerated. He was tough but he loved us. 
Musically, he taught me that I am a “percussionist” not a “sorry drummer” 😂. He taught me how to play within the confines of the music and not overpower it (alpha tendency - sorry)and to be a better team member. I could always tell when I was too loud or doing too much back there, he’d cut his eyebrows at me and stare over top of his glasses. I used to try not to make eye contact behind my drum set but when I did I knew I messed up again. Of all the people I’ve ever met, Mr. Jordan “contained” me better than anybody. Probably my foundest memory of him, I think was my Jr. year. The jazz band was playing at some city function at one of the large fire departments. We had a song where I had a nice little drum solo in the middle. He knew I always wanted to unleash. Before the song he leaned over to get my attention. He said “Ware!”  I said “yes sir?” wondering what I did wrong. He said “when you get to your part, I want you to beat the hell out of those drums”. Great man!!!

So sorry to hear of your loss, Ramona and Audrey. I cared for Mr. Jordan several years ago and it was such a sweet blessing any time I spent time with your family. I will be praying for you all in the days and weeks to come. 

Mrs Jordan, I was thinking about him just recently.  I was privileged to know and work with him as a band parent from 80-85.   I admired him so much and would have loved to share this with him. I had great respect for this talented teacher and wonderful person. He was such an inspiration to me. I will never forget my years in the East Gaston band with Raymond P. Jordan as director. I know his family will miss him terribly. What a big life he had. Thank you for sharing him with his students. 

Mr. Jordan was an inspiration to me as i learned my way through music. His guidance and his love of music is still with me today as i am still a musician at 60 years old. He commanded perfection from all his students and in return you could hear it in the bands performances. I am so thankful for his gifts to me and making me a better person and musician.  RIP Mr. Jordan. 

I first met Mr. Jordan in the late spring of 1981, while a 9th grader at Grier Junior High.  Mr. Jordan came to observe the band and pick some tuba players for the Ashbrook High School Band.  I was one of those offered to play tuba and baritone.  That summer between 9th and 10th grades, I and some others spent a few extra hours figuring out the tuba.  From being told “Ahhh Miller, don’t square the band” to his suggestions for us to “Go to the woodshed”, he always pushed us to be better.  Time and again he would give us a piece that was challenging and difficult and we would, with his guidance and teaching, reach and exceed the piece.  He was and still is a guiding light and always will be.  Few teachers have meant more to me than Mr. Jordan.    

Mr. Jordan was the first teacher I was "scared" of when I arrived at Ashbrook High School in 1990.  He was rough on the exterior, but demanded near perfection from his students.  He was all business when he stepped behind his podium.  I was a trombone player and thought I was pretty good for my age.  It wasn't long after joining the Greenwave Marching Band and beginning summer parking lot rehearsals, that I knew this man was the real deal.  Sure, we cut up in class and tested our limits, but I always knew that we were all there for one common purpose, and that was to be the best.  When we finally got our green and somewhat white, wool uniforms, and all showed up for that first home game, reality set in for me that this was more than just a performance.  Many people came to football games for the halftime show back then.  He started us out with a stern, "Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep!" and we steadily marched toward the football stadium.  Mr. Jordan walked with his band with his shoulders back and his head held high with pride.  We were HIS band.  We were HIS students.  And to him, there was no finer marching band anywhere!  It was not long into the year that I found out that Mr. Jordan was a trombone player as well, and a darn good one!  Once I learned that, it made sense why he was a little tougher on the three of us that made up the trombone section (Robby, Jamie, and me).  Thank you for showing us the high road, Mr. Jordan.  Thank you for your investment and tough love.  Thank you for teaching us ...... for that's why you chose your career, and succeeded.  A job well done, sir, and a life well lived. My prayers are with this family. Mr Jordan was my favorite teacher and he taught me so very much about just being a teen.  He had to keep me straight alot!! Go Join the big band in the sky Mr Jordan RIP!

I only had Mr. Jordan for one year at Ashbrook before I moved away.  Like him, I was a trombone player.  He helped me become an All-State musician.  He was all business with me, but I admired him greatly.  Rest In Peace, sir!

Mr. Jordan was an awesome band director.  Loved being in the marching band at Ashbrook in 82 and 83. Rest in peace!

Mrs. Jordan,  Ramona, and Audrey- 
I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Jordan.  In my years as drum majorette at Ashbrook, we spent many hours together.  He taught me much, provided guidance, and kept me in line when I needed it.  He was truly one of the most influential teachers that I ever had.
Years after I left Ashbrook, he always recognized me and greeted me with his nickname for me, Precious.  He was a man among men.
I am sending prayers for peace and comfort to you during this sad time.

I worked with Mr. Jordan at Ashbrook and taught his two lovely daughters. He was a true Christian gentleman. May God comfort you at this time.

We mourn with you  Mrs. Jordan, Audrey, and Ramona. As believers, we are assured of Mr. Jordan’s new home and that you will one day rejoin him. It is our prayer that the love and support of family and friends, and the amazing and matchless grace of God, will comfort you and give you strength.

One of the Best Men I’ve ever met. A great influence early in my life. Thanks for always treating my family as your own, I’ll see you again Sir. 

So many good memories of Mr. Jordan at Ashbrook. He knew how to connect with kids. He could tell you from a mile away which instrument in the band was off key. He never showed preference for one over the other. When we asked what he played his answer was “the radio.” To the family, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
