Richard Lee Barnes

Richard Lee Barnes, 80, went to his Heavenly home on Sept. 23, 2017. He was a native of Gaston County born May 14, 1937 to the late Thomas Franklin Barnes and Cora Lee (Welch) Barnes. Richard was a member of Chapel Grove Baptist Church and retired from WIX Filters after 25 years of service. Richard loved all sports but especially bowling, the Atlanta Braves, Miami Dolphins and UNC Tar Heels. He was a huge supporter of the young neighborhood kids and would make every effort to be present at many of their games. He also loved Gospel Music and Bluegrass and traveled many miles to hear his favorite groups. He loved his family and was a wonderful devoted husband, brother, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years Flora Hudspeth Barnes, daughters Lisa Jones, Lynn Barnes and Karen Buie all of Gastonia; grandchildren Joshua Jones of Cherryville, Kevin Jones and wife Peggy of Lincolnton, Emily Buie and Douglas Buie of Gastonia; great grandchildren Noah Jones, Landon, Liam, and Lucas Jones; brother John Kelly Barnes of Texas.; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clarence Grady, Robert Buford, Ralph Franklin, and Thomas Franklin Barnes Jr., sisters Ruby Bame and Rosa Cope.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia. Reverend Roger Overton will preside. Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM ~ 8:00 PM, Monday, September 25, 2017 at Carothers Funeral Home, 2205 Williamsburg Drive, Gastonia, North Carolina.
