Born in Graham County, NC on November 8, 1944, he was the son of the late William Nathan and Ada Garland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Dowell Garland, daughter, Laura Michelle Garland, son, Nathan “Keith” Garland, grandson, Justin Garland, sisters, Penny Phillips, Axie Eury, Wilma Royal, and infant brother, Keith Owen Garland.
Jr lived his life dedicated to his family and friends; he always went any time he was called. He loved the outdoors, hunting, and specifically fishing, where he won many tournaments throughout his life. He loved being out on the lake and fishing, which he often said is where he felt he was closest to God. He could fix anything that was broken and would drop what he was doing to help someone else. His big heart was open to not only his own children, but he often opened his home to help grandchildren and great grandchildren that needed a place to stay. He was invested in the lives of all his family, giving and never taking. His dedication and love for all his family were unmatched. He was the heart and rock of our family reunion – always keeping the fire going and turning the potatoes as the chairs kept filling up in front of his campfire. He was one of the most giving and selfless men we knew. His absence will be felt throughout our family for years to come.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his son Kenneth Garland (Angie), daughter Lisa Garland, and daughter-in-law Deborah Garland. As well as his grandchildren, Melissa Holder (Josh), Erica Garland, Nathan Garland, Megan Finger (Jacob) and Aleesa Austin along with 15 great grandchildren. He also leaves his brothers Darrell Garland of Robbinsville, NC, Gerald Garland of Robbinsville, NC, sisters Carol Cable of Iron Station, NC, Sue Maiers of Dallas, NC, and Kathy Harrison of Dalton, GA.
He will be missed by the many nephews, nieces, and extended family and friends that shared his life in stories by the campfire on Sweetwater.
Our family wishes to thank everyone who helped us during our dad’s illness. Every prayer, call, visit, food or thoughts – no matter how big or small – was so appreciated during this time. We would like to especially thank his nephew Danny Jenkins, who was like a son to Jr, for his support, care, and taking the lead when we were not able to. We are grateful to Deborah for her physical care and love for our father, as she cared for him as our brother would have if he had been here with us. We would also like to thank Carolina Caring Hospice for their support and care during this difficult time.
