Michael MacConaill

Peacefully, on May 29, in his 90th year, after a brief illness, Michael MacConaill PhD, son of the late Eileen and Michael A. MacConaill (Ireland), dear husband of Marilyn Light. Loving father of Kathleen, Dominique, Niall, and proud grandfather of Frédéric. Dear brother of Mairead and brother Roderick (Ireland), predeceased by brother Alastair. Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews, by friends and colleagues involved with cross country skiing, orienteering, orchid photography, and Gatineau Park history. According to his wishes, his remains have been cremated. Arrangements private.

Michael arrived from Ireland in 1954, taking up a post at the University of Ottawa. He visited Gatineau Park, walking to Champlain Lookout. He joined the Ottawa Ski Club, becoming an active member of the Trail Riders. Cross country skiing led to his participation in the Canadian Ski Marathon. Orienteering appealed to his navigational competency in complex terrain, offering an opportunity to compete with peers in his age class. He was Québec Orienteering Champion in the over 85 year class in 2016. He introduced his family to both sports, their participation being always of interest. His appreciation of Gatineau Park biodiversity, mathematical biology, mapping, and photographic skills played a significant role in the documentation of plant and insect population dynamics in the Park over the past 36 years. His enthusiastic involvement in fieldwork and conservation research will be greatly missed.

C'est avec tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès de Michael MacConaill, décédé paisiblement à Gatineau à l’âge de 90 ans. Il était l'époux de Marilyn Light et le fils de feu Michael A. MacConaill et feu Eileen MacConaill. Outre son épouse, il laisse dans le deuil ses trois enfants Kathleen, Dominique et Niall, son petit-fils Frédéric, sa sœur Mairead et son frère Roderick, ainsi que ses neveux et nièces et ses amis. Il fut prédécédé par son frère Alastair.

Michael est né à Sheffield en Angleterre et a déménagé à Cork en Irlande alors que la 2e guerre mondiale fait rage. Il a étudié à l’University College Cork où il a obtenu une maîtrise en sciences. Émigrant au Canada en 1954, il a obtenu son doctorat en pharmacologie à l’Université d’Ottawa où il enseignera jusqu’en 1990. Aimant les sports en plein air, il s'est impliqué dans le développement du réseau de ski de fond dans le parc de la Gatineau ainsi que dans l’essor du sport d’orienteering, et a continué à pratiquer ces sports jusqu'à dans sa dernière décennie. Il a aussi apporté son soutien aux recherches de son épouse sur des populations d’orchidées en Outaouais et d'insectes associés à ces fleurs, et fut actif au sein de diverses associations d’orchidophiles. Ces recherches lui ont permis de développer son talent en photographie et de pratiquer son amour des mathématiques, et l'a amené à voyager à travers le monde avec son épouse. Michael restera toujours vivant dans nos cœurs.
