Charles Warren (Charlie) Thomas, 80, passed away on March 27, 2023. His wife, Gloria, was at his side. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 15, at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas. The celebration will be casual as Charlie would have wanted to wear his boots and jeans.
Charlie was born on November 13, 1942, in Hereford, Texas to Homer and Luella Thomas. He attended public schools in Hereford and graduated high school in 1961. He completed a BBA in Finance at West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. Charlie met his future wife, Gloria Buchanan, at WTSU. They married in 1965 and remained together for 57 years until his passing.
In 1966 Charlie joined the United States Marine Corps and completed Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia. Charlie and Gloria's only child, Anthony Charles Thomas, was born at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina on August 11, 1967. Charlie spent 1968 in Vietnam. He was discharged from the Marine Corps and returned to his family in Texas where he started to work for Burroughs Corp in Amarillo. From Amarillo, Burroughs moved the Thomas family to Albuquerque, NM, Detroit, Mi, and Baton Rouge, LA.
Charlie and his family returned to Texas, first San Antonio and then Austin, where he changed careers to become a mathematics teacher. Most of his teaching career was spent in Luling ISD. After retiring from teaching, Charlie had one more career working for the IRS.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Luella Thomas. Survivors include his wife Gloria of Georgetown, and son Anthony of Austin. Charlie is also survived by all three of his siblings: Sue Heath and her husband Jack of Montezuma, KS; Frances Smith of Dimmitt, TX; and Glenn Thomas and his wife Mozelle of Amarillo, TX; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
The happiest years of Charlie's life were his last 3 which he, his wife and their cat, Sugar, spent in Ruidoso, NM. Charlie loved the mountains, the clear blue sky, the flowers, the wildlife, the snow, and watching the ravens. He loved to sit on the deck and enjoy it all. That was heaven on earth for him.
Charlie made friends everywhere he went. He leaves behind family and friends who have wonderful memories of time spent with him over the years. The family wishes to thank all of those who have offered comfort and prayers during this difficult time, especially the nurses in the Intermediate Care Unit at Ascension Seton Williamson Hospital and our new neighbors in Georgetown who have given love and friendship to strangers who needed it.
A memorial service for Charlie will be held on April 15, 2023 at 2pm at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Dr. Georgetown, TX 78628. Food and fellowship will follow the service.
