Elver James Mizell known as Jim, beloved husband, brother, uncle, and “Abuelo” to Everett and Jessica passed away on July 15, 2025, at the age of 78 due to ALS. Born in Port Arthur, Texas on June 8, 1947, to Thomas John and Mercer (Gould) Mizell. Jim lived a life marked by faith, service, and a deep love for his family and country.
Jim and his twin sister, Jane graduated from Buna High School in 1966. While in high school, Jim played football, ran track, and was a member of the Buna High Senior play cast. In June of 1967, he enlisted in the US Air Force and spent his years of service in Denver and North Dakota. Upon discharge from the Air Force at the rank of Sgt., Jim began a career at EXEL Energy and in 1978 he graduated with a B.S. in Science from Metropolitan College in Denver.
He met and married Donna while training in Colorado. After his military service they moved back to Denver, and he helped build a weekend getaway for family and friends in Pagosa Springs. After Donna passed, Jim stayed in Colorado where he enjoyed being a Bronco’s fan, hiking and fishing.
After Jim and Bonnie married in 2010, they moved to Sun City in Georgetown, TX and spent their summers in Pagosa.
During their marriage the couple travelled to Kenya, Costa Rica, Italy, Peru, Spain, Israel; and cruised in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, to Alaska, the Northeast coast of the US and Canada, and the British Isles.
However, the most rewarding trips Jim and Bonnie made were with Living Water International. The Living Water teams went to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Hatti. These trips were to drill wells to provide clean water to communities in need, to teach proper hygiene, and to teach the villagers about Jesus.
Much of Jim’s time was spent in service to The Worship Place at both the Sun City and Rocky Hollow campuses, by accepting the role of leader for the Facilities Services team. He became known as the Cookie Man at Rocky Hollow and was a member of the Men’s Bible Study. He also served on TWP Disaster Relief Team.
People remember him as someone who loved a good joke. He loved to brighten your day and lift your spirits by making you laugh. Jim helped countless people throughout his lifetime. He gave of himself generously as witnessed by those who knew him.
Elver James “Jim” Mizell is preceded in death by his parents John and Mercer Mizell, his brother Tommy, and sister Frances.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie; step-sons, Patrick Byrd (Sara), Dylan Byrd, Cameron Byrd (Jennifer); grandchildren Everett and Jessica Byrd; twin sister Janie, brother-in-law Joe; niece Brenda, nephews Louis, Paul, Timothy, Henry, and Edward.
“He taught us how to live by showing us how to die,” said beloved wife, Bonnie.
