Johnny Paul Brewer, a retired Optometrist with more than 30 years of experience, and disabled U.S. Army veteran, was born on January 27, 1952, and passed from this life on October 25, 2023 at the age of 71. He is survived by three sons, who were the pride and joy of his life. They are Dr. J. Ryan Brewer, D.O., and his wife Lindsey, Kyle Brewer, and wife Randee, and Paul Brewer, two grandchildren, Ava Brewer, and Luca Brewer, a brother, Bill Brewer, two sisters, Dee (Delois) Brewer DeLoach, Patricia (Pat) Brewer, eight nieces, and a nephew. He also loved his registered emotional support animal Ace, a mini Labradoodle. He was preceded in death by his parents, William John Brewer, and Billie Jean Mealer Brewer, and a brother, Jimmy Clyde Brewer.
His siblings remember him attaching cards to the spokes of his bicycle tires, being a talker, friendly to all, and the shenanigans he and his brother Jimmy would get into. He took pride in how he dressed. He was a competitor, and super achiever in school. He did not bring home books to study. When asked why, he would say, “I just remember!” He consistently remained near the top of his class academically. This trait continued through his college years, military service, and optometry school. Mr. Brewer was proud of his 10 years of military service, including working as an Army recruiter, an enlisted man as an optical lab specialist reaching E-5 status, and optometry officer, reaching the rank of Captain. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed watching the Dallas Mavericks'.
His sons remember him as a loving father, avid youth sports coach, and staunch supporter of his community and friends. He was always willing to lend a hand to the people who were important in his life and frequently had an interesting story and perspective to extend to make you think and engage in conversation for hours. He was a dreamer at heart, now and forever.
A graveside service with military honors for Johnny will be held Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at 1:15 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209.
