I felt compelled to add a memory of Joseph and Xavier.  Whenever he'd come do some projects at our house, I'd make sure to have
carne guisada. Joseph was very humble and always smiling. One day both Joe and Xavier were at the house, they came in to eat.  I turned over back to the table and saw both of them bowing their heads to pray.  It was the most beautiful image of father and son praying together. That is forever engraved in my memory.  We were blessed to know him.

Joseph Part II

He loved the little church he went to in Pflugerville. Flo and I were lucky enough to go there on July 29, 2018 and watch Joseph get ordained into the ministry.  I think that was probably the second or third happiest day of his life.  I will never forget the minister during the ceremony finished up by saying “Joseph, you are now ordained, and you can marry people, and bury them too!”  Everyone laughed.

Joseph was supposed come to our house about three weeks ago.  He did not show up.  I called his number but somehow the phone was temporarily not accepting calls.  I planed to go visit him Saturday but just this morning we found out that Joseph passed away on December 10 while on the waiting list for a new liver.  

The first half of his life is what killed him, but it was the second half of his life that saved him.  He now lives with Jesus and I am sure he is feeling much better there than he was here.  We will always remember you, and think of you, and who knows, maybe someday, we will meet again.

Joseph Part I
We met Joseph by chance one day, and he stuck. He was incredibly smart. I used to tell him, and his son Xavier, that he spoke the "King's English" becasue he did! Mexican American, who grew up poor and tough on the streets of Chicago.
He escaped to Texas and then started living, poor and tough, in the Austin area. Married too young, had kids, and took to drinking.

One thing about Joseph, when he does something, he goes all the way.  He would tell me about waking up in the morning, grabbing a beer for breakfast, and going to work.  He would drink, and work, all day long.  He always brought home a paycheck, but a lot of that money went to pay for the  DWIs he had the first half of his life.  

By the time I met him he had been clean and sober for five years.  We would see him from time to time, catch up, and tell tall tales.  He used to tell me a lovely story about his mom.  They were poor, but she always had a big pot of something cooking on the stove.  Joseph could always bring his friends over to the house and mom would feed them all. Then, one morning he woke up, and he had enough.  He lost almost everything including his children. 

Somehow Joseph stopped drinking and got help.  He crawled out of the gutter, back into the world, and sobered up.  Even though that was painful enough, he never reverted to alcohol or drugs.  The more we knew them the more we liked him and he is always giving thanks to God for his recovery.

Xavier and extended family,  Mr. G and I are truly sorry for the loss of Joseph.  Bien firme in his faith. We were truly blessed to have met him.  May HIS grace be bright upon you and your family during this difficult time.  We are confident Joe is rejoicing.
