

Kathy graduated from Temple High School in 1967 and went on to pursue higher education at North Texas University, earning her undergraduate degree in May 1983 and her graduate degree in August 1987. Her passion for education led her to a distinguished career with Alvarado Independent School District, where she served as an elementary art teacher from 1983 to 1986. She later became an elementary school principal from 1987 to 2002 and continued in school administration until her retirement in 2007. Kathy was deeply respected for her leadership, dedication, and lasting impact on students and staff.
On May 24, 1974, Kathy married the love of her life, Dan Amburn, with whom she shared many cherished years.
Outside of her professional life, Kathy was an avid square and round dancer. She was highly active in the dance community and held numerous leadership roles, including President of the T-Square Gadaboutes Square and Round Dance Club, Vice President of the North Texas Square and Round Dance Association (NORTEX), President of the Texas State Federation of Square and Round Dancers (TSFSRD), Vice Chairman of the National Square and Round Dance Conference, and Vice President of the Shirts and Skirts Square and Round Dance Club. Her enthusiasm and commitment brought joy to many and helped strengthen the dance community across the state and beyond.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Maron Brizendine and Peggy Brizendine Wooley, and her sister, Suzie Brizendine.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Dan Amburn; her son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Donna Amburn; and her stepdaughter, Tia May. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Dylan Brinkley and his wife, and Chisum Brinkley.
Kathy was blessed with a large and loving family, including her great-grandchildren: Kassadee Brinkley, Emily Brinkley, Bearon Brinkley, Colyer Brinkley, Zoey Brinkley, Irish Brinkley, Vivian Brinkley, and Evelyn Brinkley; as well as her great-great-grandchildren: Adalynn Sanders, Jake Sanders, and Koda Sanders.
Kathy will be remembered for her warmth, leadership, dedication to education, and her joyful spirit on the dance floor. She leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and community that will be cherished by all who knew her.
