

Mary lived with her sister Lois and her brother-in-law Charles while completing high school in Houston. She attended East Texas State University and graduated with honors from what is now Texas Woman’s University in 1931. She moved to Austin, Texas, to begin a long teaching career; first at University Junior High in Austin and later with the Georgetown public schools.
She met Charles Forbes while teaching in Austin, Texas. They were married on April 12, 1942, and left immediately for the West Coast where Charles took up his duties as a Naval officer. During World War II, Mary lived in San Francisco, San Diego, and New York, while Charles was at sea. At the end of the War, Mary and Charles moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where their first son, Charles, Jr. (Chuck), was born. In 1948, they moved to Georgetown, Texas where Charles became the wholesale distributor for the Humble Oil and Refining Company. Their second son, Thomas A. (Tommy), was born in Georgetown in 1949. Mary lived the rest of her life in Georgetown.
Mary Forbes was lively, lovely, and fun-loving. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown for over 60 years as well as a member of the Georgetown Woman’s Club, Phi Mu Fraternity, and a participant in many other civic activities. Mary supported Charles as he served the community as mayor, school board member, businessman, and civic leader.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Charles, and her son, Charles Jr.; and is survived by her son, Thomas, and his wife, Shelley Scott, and their two children, Matthew Wright and Lillian Wright all of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Linda Reavis Forbes of New Braunfels, Texas; two grandchildren, Charles A. Forbes, III (Trey) and Dawn Forbes Kesselring; and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., on Monday, January 3, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church in Georgetown, Texas.
The family requests that memorials be sent to either the First Presbyterian Church in Georgetown or the Trustees’ Endowment for Faculty Enrichment at Southwestern University in Georgetown.
