Matt was born on September 22, 1985, in Wisconsin to Kurt and Linda Oefelein. The youngest of four children, he spent much of his childhood in McHenry and Freeport, Illinois, and graduated from Freeport High School in 2003. He went on to earn a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Chicago and was working toward his Doctorate of Philosophy in Business Administration from Northcentral University. Matt built a proud career as a Supervisor at the United States Postal Service, where he was known for leading with integrity and taking pride in his work.
Outside of work and study, Matt was full of life and passions. He was a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, Cubs, Bulls, and Blackhawks. He loved spending time with his daughter Kaydence, traveling to Devils Lake, hiking and climbing, playing guitar, fishing on the lake or river, and fixing anything with an engine. He found peace in the outdoors and joy in being active, adventurous, and connected to nature.
Friends and family will remember Matt for his quick humor, generous heart, and gentle, loyal spirit.
Matt is survived by his daughter, Kaydence Oefelein (13), and her mother, Ember Bolan; his siblings, Jackey Lighthart (Jason Holby) of Rockford, IL, Justin Oefelein (Sonya Oefelein) of Vermont, and Becky Oefelein of Freeport, IL. He was preceded in death by his father, Kurt Oefelein (2020), and mother, Linda Oefelein (December 2025).
A memorial and celebration of life will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Rock Cut State Park, Puri Crest Pavilion, 7223 W. Lane Rd., Caledonia, IL. All who knew and loved Matt are welcome to join in remembering and celebrating his life.
