Steve, We'd only briefly become acquainted and have been so saddened by your sudden departure. Rest assured in his resurrection promise, when we will all meet Jesus in the air. We pray blessings continue for all of your family.

We will miss you so much Bro. Stover, you have always met so much to me and my family.. Thank you Bro Stover for taking my sons under your wings.

Hey dad, you were an awesome man and example to Shaleen and I. You were strict but you loved us and you were following The Word. You loved and cherished mom and showed me how to treat and love my wife. You always laughed at Laurel and Hardy, Home Alone 2, and other stuff. You were not quiet when SC or the Dodgers were playing and I loved it. You loved God and are now home. Thx for the memories. Your son Kent

I will never forget how we would get lost as the family would drive around looking at Christmas lights in Colorado Springs.  We would then try to find our way back home. 

However, on April 28,2017, you didn't need any directions for your Heavenly Home! Those directions were planned years ago and provided by your Heavenly Father!  Love and miss you!

I am so sorry for your loss. It is obvious that he was an awesome servant of the Lord and loving and carrying family man. My thoughts and prayers have been with the daily all week.

Ruby & Steve Stover
Courtship Story

Steve's first vision of 15 yr. old Ruby, was at a friend's wedding in Long Beach, California, and she was with a date. They met later at a church youth meeting where Steve was not her only potential suitor.

Fearing he may strike out, he didn't go up to bat. Finally, he stepped up to the pitcher's mound, gained courage and threw a slow ball by giving Ruby a call. She in turn bunted, letting Steve know he hadn't struck out, but he wasn't going to get to first base either.  At least not on the first pitch.

As it was still early in the game, Steve kept pitching and grew jealous that Ruby was showing interest in a rival team player. She finally agreed to give him a chance.

Ruby, who lived in Westmoreland, California, some 200 miles from Steve, came to visit with her sister, Inez and family in Lakewood, California. She hadn't arrived more than 30 minutes, and Steve was pitching again.

The game plan changed, however, and Steve scored points when he came calling with the Cadillac of chocolates, Sees Candy.  For her birthday he gave her Chanel #5 and her first Valentine's Day card was a whopping 8 x 10.

Oh buddy, Steve was cruising now.  He had intercepted this lady's affections and was ready to rush toward the goal. He professed his undying love to her in a letter.  To which she cried foul.  A penalty was called and he was issued a warning, if he didn't cool his jets, he was out of the game.

So he waited. Then he drop kicked another offer in an effort to score points by giving Ruby his class ring.  Her sister, Fanny,  and brother in law, Max, ran interference and the ring was returned.

Realizing long drives would be par for the course.  Neither rain nor sand-traps would keep him from scoring this birdie. 

However, another team intercepted his continued efforts.  Uncle Sam drafted Steve into the Army-vs-Vietnam. But Steve wasn't going to leave without scoring some kind of victory first. He planted a first kiss on Ruby, which left this feline purring beautiful music.  

After spring training, Steve's next season was played in Germany. Meanwhile, Ruby was playing Aggravation and going Racko. She was Sorry there seemed to be interference in this game plan. 

Another rival player tried to woo her affections elsewhere.  Ruby tried to redecorate his life and bus him out of there, but he kept being the artful Dodger and throwing those fast balls.

Steve had his own fast ball.  Urged by his parents to come home on leave, save the game, and keep the other guy out of bounds, Steve suggested getting married right then.

Unfortunately, Ruby hadn't graduated high school yet and she couldn't go back to Germany with Steve either, so the answer was to wait.

He later officially proposed in a letter, one of 400 written between them. Then he sent her a watch to seal the engagement.  

He impressed his future father-in-law by sending her a set of pots and pans from Germany as a practical' graduation present.

Ruby moved from Westmoreland to Lakewood where she pursued a job, wedding plans and the fine art of baking, burning and burying the results down the garbage disposal.  With a little help from Steve's youngest sister, Paulette.

When Steve's contract was up, he was ready for some R & R.  Strike one, Steve. As coach Ruby had a game plan of her own. She had waited faithfully 3 years and he was not getting out of this arena. He signed on to play and he was going to finish the game.

Two weeks before the wedding, Steve choked at bat. Ruby gave him a strong pep talk and they were off and running.

The big event took place Friday night, September 28, 1968 at Calvary Apostolic Tabernacle in Lakewood, CA and was witnessed by 250 guests.

According to Steve, he knew he would be too tired to drive to their honeymoon destination of Santa Barbara, so he prearranged the bridal suite at a hotel in Panorama City. For some reason, Ruby's version was a little different. 

Their first home was an apartment in Long Beach, California. Their first new team member, Steven Kent was born 5 years later and another new addition, Shaleen Annette, was born 3 years after Kent.

The field trip' of life they would travel together, would take their family from Long Beach, CA to Duarte where Steve worked for World Vision Int'l, then to Rocklin, CA. They would soon move to Napa, CA where Steve worked in submarines for the Navy and Ruby drove the school bus for Napa Valley School District. 

Temporarily leaving his wife and daughter in Napa to complete the sale of their house, Steve and Kent left for Colorado Springs where Steve started working for the Air Force Academy before retiring several years later.

They moved to Texas in September 2016 to be near their children and grandchildren.


The stadium lights have dimmed. The scoreboard is turned off. Steve's testimony is sealed.

The band of angels have tuned up their instruments, they stand in formation as Steve passes the ball to the next generation to carry the banner of the Cross. He has scored his final touchdown. He has won the game.

Our friendship began when we were young married couples with growing families. We shared many things, but Steve's love for USC football was the tie that bound us.  We both grew up in church and we have raised our families to love and trust in Jesus.  Even though years and distance has separated us, those precious memories we made together were never forgotten. Ruby I am so sorry, My heart goes out to you.
But we  will all be together again  with our Lord and Savior.
I will never for get all the fun trips we took . Remember the one when we piled in our  RV and went to Precious Moments and then to where Steve was born.. 
I loved teasing him about  spending his money.  He would just look at me  with that sweet smile.
We will miss you.

So sorry for y'alls loss I pray that Jesus gives the family a since of peace and strength y'all need everyday ,Kent plz give your Mom my Blessing ,I pray that the Lord Blesses y'all more and more each day that goes by ,always remember the memories of all the good times love y'all Fab

Ruby, we are so sorry to learn of Steve's passing. We have fond memories of visiting with him in your home...and especially of his bright smile and engaging way. May our Lord wrap you and your family in His warm and comforting embrace.

I met Steve several years ago when Ruby invited three old school friends from California.  It was a marvelous time.  Steve sat quietly smiling as these women turned into silly, giggling, little girls again.  He never stopped smiling, and I am sure he still is.

Steve, when I used to visit and stay with you when you were living in Norwalk, we used to stay up all night and play Monopoly. I remember both of us was always trying get "Boardwalk and Park Place". Those were some fun days. It's too bad you were a Dodger fan. You know I have always been a Yankee fan. With the team they have this year, they could win another World Series. I am going to miss you. Steve, we graduated high school together and now you made your final graduation little bit ahead of me...but it won't be long till we ALL will be together again!

Yes of all the trips we made up in the mountains. Sam and he where always talking about retiring and   buying a golf course somewhere. So that your Dad could play all the golf he Wanted . The great picnics we had in the mountains.


I have many memories.  I never seen him mad. He always had a smile.  Rusty, you, Ruby, and Sharleen played Phase 10 and uno.   We went camping at Casinos Ranch camping. Had so much fun.  As long as I can remember, I never heard Steve raise his voice. The world has lost  the nicest and sweetest person I know. I will send more as I remember.  I am old you know.
