February 4, 2024, Wilburn Donald Shrewsbury, 88, peacefully passed away at his home he shared with his daughter for the past 11 years. He was born on June 13, 1935, alongside his twin brother in Princeton, West Virginia to Clayton Clarence Shrewsbury and Mary Sue Huffman.
He periodically attended Spanishburg High School, as in those days schooling took second place to working the farm. Needless to say he was a self taught man! He could do just about anything he set his mind to.
In 1954, he joined the United States Air Force, which brought him to Texas and the Bergstrom Air Force Base. Later, he met a young lady, Betty Smith from Liberty Hill, whom he soon married. They welcomed their first daughter, Cherry Sue. He left the Air Force in 1957. Soon afterward the couple welcomed a big baby boy, Clarence Wayne.
He later attended night school in Austin, eventually hiring on at the Texas Highway Department, where he remained until the family picked up in 1970 and moved to West Virginia.
He learned the trade of carpentry of which he became very skilled in. Built a home in Flat Top, West Virginia. Later, he learned other skills, big machinery (coal mine) mechanical work. Later, he ended up working in North Carolina at a water treatment plant. He eventually moved to North Carolina and married his second wife Rhoda Fisher and built another house all while working at the plant. Retired from the water treatment plant in 2000. After the unexpected death of his wife Rhoda, he sold out and moved to Texas to share out his life with his daughter. He loved spending time in the woods with his brothers and friends hunting. Many good times and funny stories were shared among them. He especially loved his family pets, Button and Bow. Western movies and his Louis L’amour movies and paperback books were a big part of his entertainment. He and his daughter spent precious days while he taught her skills of carpentry and plumbing, etc. His desire was to make sure she could take care of herself. What a legacy he has left her with!!!
