‘Al’ as he was affectionately known to his many friends, was born in Glace Bay to Angus and Kay (Ferguson) MacLean, on Nov. 28, 1943.
Al received his Certificate of Social Work in 1970 and worked as a counsellor for Family Services of Eastern Nova Scotia for 12 years. After receiving his Masters of Social Work from Dalhousie University, he worked for the Nova Scotia Health Association until his retirement in 2006.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Diana (Wyld); daughter Allana (Troy McLean) of Halifax; son Jarrod (Susan Boshcoff) of Toronto; and brothers Angus, Fred (Rita), and sister Marian (Weegar).
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Catherine “Babe" Thomson.
Al's love of sports included playing basketball, bowling, skating, and fishing. He loved gardening and digging clams, but especially enjoyed spending time with his family, which included family events participating in 5 & 10k runs over the years. Most notably he was proud that he completed a half marathon in Toronto in 2011, with a very respectable time.
Al always loved a good conversation and enjoyed many evenings in front of the fireplace with his family. He took pride in the fact that his family was close and enjoyed spending time together. He was also an active member of Warden United Church as a choir member, and served on several church committees.
Visitation for Al will be held on Tuesday January 12, 2016 from 2-4 & 7-9pm in Patten Funeral Home 71 Union St Glace Bay. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday January 13 at 11am in Warden United Church with Rev. Carol Gillard officiating.
