It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Beatrice Viola Skanes (nee Slade) of South St, formally of Gannon St and Lake Rd. October 13, 2023, at 95 years old, Beatrice passed peacefully with family by her side, at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Thomas and Grace Slade.
Beatrice is survived by her sister Greta Mae Hibbs (George decd), her children Mae (George), Darlene, Reg (Elinor), Fred (Geraldine), her loving grandchildren Peter (Ruth), Kelly (Ryan), Christopher (Kate), Beth Anne, Kathleen, Brian (Leslie), Tracy and Michael (Lindsay) and her great-grandchildren, Violet, Maddison, Ewan, Alasdair, Rachael, Nathan, Lilly, Noah and Maddie. This list of family would not be complete without mentioning her honorary “third son” Terry Best (Linda).
Beat, Mom, Nanny or Nana B, however, you knew her, was predeceased by her loving husband Reg. As a couple, in their younger years, they enjoyed camping with their children and would often travel across Canada. They camped in their tent trailer with their grandchildren and in retirement, travelled the world on bus tours. We all have a key chain from Alaska or a trinket from Paris to remind us of them.
Beatrice enjoyed her years in Lodge as well as time spent with the ladies of the Neighbourhood Club and the St. Mary’s Ladies Auxiliary. She had an excellent knowledge of family history and was an avid baker, seamstress, and quilt maker. Her quilts are cherished and will keep her close to us always. We will miss her and her baking but her tea biscuit recipe has been passed on and will not be lost.
Visitation for the late Beatrice Skanes will be held at 1pm at St Mary's Church in Glace Bay, October 18th, and will be followed by Funeral Services at 2pm in St. Mary’s Church, Glace Bay with Rev. Myrna MacMullin officiating and Internment in Greenwood Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff of both Glace Bay Regional Hospital and Taigh Na Mara for their care and compassion.
