

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Martha (Mattie) Simmonds, formerly of Donkin, at Seaview Manor Glace Bay.
Martha was born in New Waterford to the late Janet (Cherrie) Mawhinney.
At an early age Mattie works at T. Eaton company until she met the love of her life James Cameron Simmonds. On his passing they had been married 57 years.
Cameron was in the services, so he and Mattie were stationed in various provinces until his retirement, at which time they took up residency in Donkin, where Mattie remained until fire destroyed her house (at the age of 89). Being the trooper she was she adopted to her new life of rental in Glace Bay, driving her car and being self sufficient. Mattie resided there for 6 years until she became infirmed and entered Seaview Manor.
Mattie loved to shop and cook, it was her greatest pleasures.
Besides her mother she was predeceased by husband Cameron and daughter Janie, she was the last survivor of her immediate family.
She is survived by niece Beverley Murrant, cousins Joan, Kaye, Mary, Margaret and Johnny.
Visitation for Mattie will be held on Friday September 29, 2023 in Patten Funeral Home 71 Union St Glace Bay from 3pm-6pm. Funeral service in St. Luke’s United church in Donkin will be held Saturday Sept 30 at 11am, burial to follow in Parish cemetery.
Special thank you to numerous people over the years who became friends with Mattie, Emily, Adele, Linda and Ann. A special Thank you to Cathy and Art Spencer who over the years treated Mattie as one of their family. Also special Thanks to Seaview Manor for their supportive care for Mattie as she made her journey.
