Sandy Simms

1956-2016

With great sadness and heartache we announce the passing of Sandy Simms on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at the Glace Bay Hospital with loving family at his side. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Alexander Simms and Emma (Nichols) Simms, both of Newfoundland.

In his early years Sandy was employed at Avco Financial Services and Scotiabank. For the next 20 years he was an employee of Cape Breton Development Corporation. Upon its closure he worked very hard to obtain his Degree in Education at the University of Maine, Fort Kent. He then spent a year teaching in Loon River, Alberta. Since then he has been an employee of the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board. Sandy loved being a teacher and at the time of his death was a teacher at Oceanview Education Center in Glace Bay.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother Bert Simms. He is survived by his wife, Delsie (Gaskell), his son Sandy (Sharlene) Glace Bay, daughter, Holly (Darcy) Glace Bay, sister Pam (Bill) Strub, Kitchener, Ont., sister Mary Brown, Glace Bay and his beloved Abby.

Sandy was also loved and will be missed by many relatives and friends and his very close friend Rick Brown.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, September 13 from 7-9pm at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service on Wednesday at 11am in St. Mary’s Church, Reverend Vernon Reid officiating. Donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
