Willena Joyce King

It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of our aunt Willena Joyce King on December 28, 2025. She died at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Willena was born in Glace Bay on September 6, 1931 to the late William and Hilda (Jacobs) King of Glace Bay.

Willena lived all of her life in Glace Bay, and she worked in the Glace Bay school system all her professional life. In the summers, she traveled to study at Mount Saint Vincent University until she acquired the highest level of teaching license in Nova Scotia. She first taught at New Aberdeen School, then was the reading specialist for the town traveling to schools throughout Glace Bay.

Willena loved music, especially singing and playing the piano. She taught music from her home to many students.

Willena is survived by her niece Heather (MacKenzie) Bishop in Calgary Alberta, and nephew Darryl MacKenzie in San Diego California. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters Lorraine MacKenzie, Alma King, and Delores King.
