Dearest Mary and family, 
It's been many, many years but my memories of you all from Hickman Mills Christian Church and Symington Grade School are such good ones.....a wonderful family. Have missed you, Mary! My loving sympathy goes out to you all in the loss of Con. He was such a caring gentleman. May God grant you peace and bless you with strength, His compassion and love. Seventh Grade at McCoy Elementary School in Kansas City, Missouri: 1956 was the year I graduated from McCoy, when I was awkward, clumsy Betty Varner, preceded two years earlier by my brother Robert Varner.  Bob had been privileged to be assigned to Mr. Miner's class, and I followed two years later.  Bob and I often talked about our experiences in Mr. Miner's class, sharing memories,  wondering where he was and what he was doing.

With dry humor, along with strict classroom standards, Mr. Miner challenged his students to reach and learn beyond the textbooks.  Most memorable to me of the subjects he taught was The American Constitution.  I can still see in my mind the book we used; I came away with an abiding love and respect for our  American Constitution.

As a result of the example he was, one of the finest teachers I ever knew, I became a teacher myself, living in the state of New Mexico for almost thirty years. Mr. Miner spoke often of his love for the American West, and I wished I could tell him how I had also come to love the West.

I am so sorry I missed the opportunity to see him at the open house held at McCoy before the building was demolished. 

To the family I can only say I know how proud you must be of your husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  I want you to know that he will be remembered and revered by thousands like myself as long as we live.

Although you may not remember me, you were a dear friend to my husband Bruce during his days at Symington School. I know I met you and your husband at a couple of school events somewhere. I cannot tell you how sorry I am to read of your great loss.     You are so fortunate to have such wonderful, loving parents....and they are so fortunate to have you for a son....I have such fond memories of you at age seven......please give a hug to your Mother for me.   Con met me when I was 5 at JFSC and taught me to swim; however, even more importantly, he taught me how to teach children to swim, to thrive, and to grow into their potential. He knew the importance of calling campers by their names by the end of the first week and valuing each contribution and every effort. He was an intimidating presence but he was as caring and motivating a teacher as ever there was. He expected hard work from his employees and got it. He believed that most people are doing the best they can most of the time. He inspired me to become a teacher and his words, "when they are ready, they will go," didn't just apply to children jumping into deep water. They apply to many of the growth challenges that young people face. He believed in the competency of children and the need to guide them to becoming good citizens.  And he was their role model and mine.

He was first in line to donate blood for my dad. He taught children, teachers, administrators, and many who had lost their way. He was ever the student, the traveler.
He embodied grit. He believed, like Elie Wiesel, who died the day before Con, in never, never giving up on doing the right thing.

He loved helping children. He loved his wife, his children and their families; and he loved his friends and theirs. They made him proud and they made him grateful. 

I am grateful for having been his camper and his friend. May Con rest in peace and may his dear family be comforted by the memories and love that they shared with him.

I wish that distance did not keep me from being at his funeral but my thoughts and love go out to you all.

I was so fortunate to grow up on 110th St in Red Bridge with wonderful neighbors like Mr. Miner.  Hugs to Mrs. Miner and the rest of the family.

Mr. Miner was definitely one of the best principals in the KCMO School District. I feel privileged to have worked with him.

In loving memory of a wonderful person and neighbor.  He made our home in Red Bridge a good place for all who lived on our street.  He is finally at peace.
