Doris June Carmichael passed away on September 19 in Laurie, MO at the age of 90. Doris was born January 10, 1935, in Kearney, MO to Everett F. Ford and Beulah (Henson) Ford. As a young girl, she learned to play the violin, piano, and organ. She was a member of the Girl Scouts and eventually became leader of her own troop taking them through the rank of Cadettes. She was a Candy Striper volunteer at a hospital and worked at Household Finance Corporation in North Kansas City, MO. Doris graduated from North Kansas City High School in May 1953 and married her high school sweetheart, Larry G. Carmichael, on June 7, 1953. She worked with her husband to build their first house in the Lawn Acres neighborhood, and the couple raised their four daughters in Gladstone, MO. Doris was a loving homemaker, mother, and dedicated volunteer throughout her life taking on roles of school room mother, school library volunteer, and playing piano when asked for church choir rehearsals and dance classes.
Doris was a member of the United Methodist Church, attending Winnwood UMC and Gashland UMC in Kansas City, MO and Ozark Chapel UMC in Laurie, MO. She sang in the church choir and was active in the UMC women’s groups. Doris enjoyed taking care of young children and would help family, friends and young mothers by watching their children. She was a paid volunteer for the Parent’s Day Out program at the Gashland church, assisting in getting this church outreach program started and then retiring after 25 years of service. After retiring and moving to the Lake of the Ozarks, Doris volunteered alongside her husband at the Community for Christ Outreach Center in Sunrise Beach and the Gravois Mills Westside Senior Center. When Laurie Care Center opened the employee child care program, she was delighted to again have the opportunity to watch young children learn and grow and to make crafts with them. Doris stayed active while living at the Laurie Care Center attending daily exercise classes and many other activities and outings.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the caregivers at Laurie Care Center for their dedication in taking care of Doris during her ten years of residency.
