Gail Schlifka, beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 1, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 79. Born on November 7, 1949, in Chicago, Gail was the cherished daughter of the late LaVerne and Julius Bichowsky.
Gail was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Patrick Schlifka, with whom she shared a life filled with love, family, and purpose. She is survived by her three loving children: Brett Schlifka and his wife Melissa, and their daughters Tatiana, Sabrina, and Serafina; Tara Clark (née Schlifka) and her husband Scott, and their daughters Grace and Madeleine; and Ryan Schlifka and his daughter Vivienne. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she reveled in every moment spent with them.
A pioneer in early childhood education, Gail dedicated her career to nurturing young minds as a preschool teacher at John Middleton Elementary School in Skokie and later at Calhoun North Elementary School on Chicago’s West Side. Her students—and their families—remember her kindness, creativity, and unwavering commitment to helping children thrive.
Those who knew Gail will remember her warmth, humor, and steadfast devotion to the people and causes she loved. She was a true dog lover, always accompanied in life by one or more loyal four-legged companions. She had a fondness for movies and TV shows, particularly game shows and her all-time favorite, M*A*S*H*, which brought her both laughter and comfort, and which her children had fond memories of watching with her.
Gail also treasured her deep friendships, including a special bond with her devoted friend and hair stylist of over 20 years, Allison Amick, whose companionship and care brought Gail great joy and confidence through the years.
Gail’s life was one of love, service, and dedication. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and deep familial devotion. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.
She will be sorely missed.
A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gail’s honor to a children’s education charity or local animal shelter of your choice.
