Jerry was born on October 5th, 1929, in Shelbina, Mo., to Calvin and Edith (Huss) Burke. Jerry graduated from Shelbina High School in 1947 and immediately joined the Army and served until 1950. He was stationed at Fort Richardson in Alaska (USARAL) for several months building roads. After the Army, he met and married Valeria Bilyeu and the pair welcomed a daughter, Laura, in 1957. In 1986, Valeria unexpectedly passed away.
Jerry found love again when he met Mary Stratton. The two married in 1989. Together they enjoyed “Sunday Dinners” with the family, gardening and antique shopping.
Jerry dedicated his career to the US postal service for 41 years before retiring in 1992. After retiring, Jerry worked for two years as a Security Guard at KCP&L. He then dedicated himself to enjoy his retirement with family, especially his grandchildren. Jerry was kind, generous and had a deep, unconditional love beyond measure for his grandchildren. He was a great role model, with an incredible source of love, guidance and inspiration. They were the light of his life.
Jerry was a devout Christian and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed listening to gospel music and entertaining the family playing the harmonica. Jerry also collected coins and he was a huge Chiefs fan for many years and never missed watching a game.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert Burke; sisters, Helen Burke and Geraldine; daughter, Laura Burke; first wife, Valeria, second wife, Mary, and his beloved companion Chesi.
Jerry is survived by his bonus daughters, Margo (Joe) Graziano and Cindy Sellars; grandson’s Jevon Burke, Jordan Burke and Markis (Magen) Weese; one granddaughter, Almasi Wambua; six great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
