Hazel was born on March 6, 1922 in Gallatin, Missouri to Oscar and Lillie Annis. Hazel married Charles Levi Shippee, Jr. in 1940 and loved him fiercely her whole life, even after his death in 1986. Hazel and Charles settled in the Village of Oaks (Gladstone, Missouri) where they had one child, Charles “Lee” Shippee (1947-2016). They also started a successful, family-owned wholesale agricultural commodities company, where Hazel worked alongside her husband and/then son, even earning the 1997 Anne Robb Townsend Excellence Award for Business (quite the accomplishment for a women in her field).
Hazel was a very active and dedicated member of her community, helping charter the Kansas City Symphony Guild and Clay County Fine Arts Council. She was generous in time and resources for all of her passions, including the Kansas City Anthenaeum, Philharmonic Guild North and NKC Business Council. She traveled extensively around the world for the Kansas City Women’s Association for International Trade, a post she was very proud to hold. She was also active in her church, an avid Gardner, Golfer and loved to host events in her beautiful home. She will be deeply missed by anyone who knew her.
Hazel is proceeded in death by her parents, siblings, husband and child in addition to countless cherished friends and loved ones.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Kristin Shippee, Ann Shippee and Adam (Tracy) Shippee as well as her great-grandchildren, Brooke “Jay” Delatorre and Alyssa Liscomb (Kristin) and Gracelyn and Benjamin Shippee (Adam).
A visitation is scheduled at 9:00 am followed by a Funeral at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 4947 NE Chouteau Drive in Kansas City. The committal service will follow at 11:30 am at White Chapel Cemetery, 6600 NE Antioch Road in Gladstone. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Hazel's life.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Kansas City Symphony Guild at: https://www.kcsymphonyguild.org.
The family would like to especially thank the Oxford Grand at Shoal Creek Memory Unit for their wonderful care and dedication to Hazel during the years she lived with them.
