John Edward “Ed” Mutti, Jr. was born on August 10, 1939 in Maryville, Missouri to John Edward Mutti, Sr., and Lucille Clarice (Harris) Mutti. He was the first of two sons. Ed grew up in Hopkins, Missouri, and graduated from Hopkins High School as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1957. Ed was an excellent student in all subjects, but he was particularly good at math. He played saxophone both in the school bands and in dance bands that performed throughout Nodaway County.
Ed attended Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri, before transferring to the University of Kansas, where he graduated with an accounting degree in 1961. He was a life-long Jayhawk men’s basketball fan, faithfully following the team and sharing a spirited rivalry with his Mizzou Tiger loving relatives.
After college, Ed worked for the accounting firm Arthur Young in St. Louis before joining the US Army Reserve. He later moved to Kansas City where he worked for Touche, Ross, Bailey, & Smart and as the controller of Acord Shoes, Inc., before starting the firm of Hutchinson, Williams, and Mutti. For most of his career he ran his own accounting business, specializing in tax preparation, first in downtown Kansas City and later in North Kansas City. He enjoyed chatting with clients and working with his long-time assistant and friend Sharon Padgett.
Ed was a Northlander for most of his adult life, serving the community in various capacities. He was a decades-long member of the North Kansas City United Methodist Church before it closed in 2018 and merged with North Cross United Methodist Church. He held various offices in the NKC church, and was a long-time board member of both the North Kansas City Hospital and the Northland Assistance Center. He also gave back to Nodaway County as a trustee for the Gladys Rickard Charitable Trust.
Ed was a dedicated son, brother, and uncle. He lovingly cared for his parents as they aged. He also was close to the family of his brother Jim and his sister-in-law Carla, attending countless family gatherings, KC Chiefs watch parties, outings, and trips. Uncle Ed – as many people knew him – was an exceptional uncle to Jim and Carla’s kids and grandkids. He attended many school programs, ball games, plays, dance recitals, choir concerts, and graduations over the years.
Ed was a resident of Kansas City, Platte County, Missouri. He passed away at North Kansas City Hospital in North Kansas City, Missouri on May 15, 2025. He is survived by his brother, Dr. James H. Mutti, Sr., and his wife Carla of Kansas City, Missouri; niece Diane Mutti Burke and her husband David of Kansas City, Missouri; nephew James H.
