He battled cancer for 17 months with grace and the strength of a warrior. Mark graduated high school from Winnetonka High in 1978, attended Southwest Missouri State University (MO State), and ultimately received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1984 earning a degree in Civil Engineering. Mark later went on to earn his Professional Engineer credentials. He worked for MODOT for 30 years, retiring in 2012. His two most notable accomplishments in this role were the Bruce Watkins Drive project and the Three Trails Crossing (Grandview Triangle bridge). After two years of retirement, he took a position with TranSystems as a PE. This role took him to South Carolina in 2016 where he spent four years in Greenville, working on the I385/I85 bridge project. From there, he transferred to Irmo where he completed a 10-bridge highway project on I-26. In August 2023, Mark and April moved back to their family home to finish his chemo treatments.
Above all the professional accolades, Mark was a good husband, loving father, and a loyal friend and brother, always willing to lend a helping hand. Mark is survived by his wife of 36 years, April Stock; daughter, Shaunta Sloan (Curtis); and son, Colton Stock. Mark also leaves behind three siblings, Larry Stock (Angela), Tom Stock (MaryBeth), and Maggie Robinson as well as 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 8 nieces and 1 nephew. Mark is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Maxine Mills; father, Lawrence Edward Stock; and sister, Teresa Mae Wiersch.
Mark never let his illness stop him from fulfilling a commitment, promise, or living a life of God. Mark and April were parishioners at St. Gabriel Catholic Church for many years. Mark’s final wish for his friends and family was to live a life of intention, be kind, and forgive any wrongdoings. He loved a good cigar, a glass of bourbon or a cold beer, and the friendships that inevitably found him. Mark was funny but strict. He never expected more from anyone than what he expected of himself….and he made no bones about redoing tasks he considered subpar.
