Melvin L. Garrett Jr., 84, of Smithville, Missouri passed away June 1, 2018. He was born in Decatur, Illinois on April 28, 1934. He became a part of the Boy Scouts of America Troops 304 and 395 and received his Eagle Scout in 1952 shortly after joining the Mic-O-Say Tribe in 1951 and eventually became a Scout Master. Mel graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1953 and joined the Army National Guard where he served until 1961. Mel had four children with his, then wife, Geneva Ann Blair. He worked at Trans World Airlines at for 29 years and retired in 1996. Mel also had his own business providing horse and carriage rides in the community for 47 years, mainly serving Weston, Missouri. He loved to ride his motorcycle, playing cards, shooting pool, playing Santa Claus, and spending time with his loved ones.
Mel is preceded in death by both his parents Melvin Garrett Sr. and Mildred Duncan and stepson Vernie Ray Long.
Mel was survived by his wife of 25 years, Ethel Mae Long Garrett, his children John Michael Garrett, Steven Garrett (Lynn), Mark Garrett (Luisa), Cherie Murphy (Lee), Mae's son Douglas Long (Modessa), and brother David Garrett. Grandchildren that survive him are Joshua (Amanda), Michaela (Tyler), Marcus, Mitchell, Justin, Mason, Katie, Rachel, Marcella, Kassie, and Jessica (Eric). Great grandchildren include Delaney, Hazekiah, Harper, Azryel, Wyatt, Zaylin, Elijah, Micah, Andrew, and Adriana.
The family will receive visitors at White Chapel Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 5 starting at 6pm and going through 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Family Worship Center of Smithville on Wednesday, June 6 at 10 am with burial following at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Gladstone, Missouri.
