She moved with her parents and sister, Michelle (Shelly) Warlen, 5 years later to Kansas City, Missouri. She loved her family, particularly her two nieces, Bailey, to whom she was godmother, and Riley.
She graduated from Park Hill High School in 1990, after which she worked at Fred P. Ott’s while attending Maple Woods Community College. After leaving Fred P. Ott’s, she worked at 54th Street Grill and Bar as a bartender for a number of years, where she met her husband James. She was a beloved employee and co-worker. Her myriad regulars and co-workers were all astonished by her positive attitude and gregarious personality.
In 2002, her and James were married. They became parents to Samuel in 2004. She was a devoted mother. Always loving and caring to Sam, but also to every person that she came in contact with. She cherished every moment that she had with family and with friends, particularly the times she spent at the fields watching her son play baseball. She enjoyed, not only the times she spent watching her son, but also the times she spent developing friendships with the other parents on Sam’s teams.
Her career developed from a bartender into that of an accounting specialist at Houlihan’s Restaurants Inc, to Systems analyst at NIC Inc, and finally a Senior Accountant at Corbion Inc. It was during this time that Nicki set out to complete her education. She attained her Associates degree from MidAmerica Nazarene University in 2013 and was working on completing her Bachelor’s from Baker University. And again, her infectious personality affected all those around her. She valued her time working for these companies, but more importantly she valued her friends and colleagues more.
In 2014, Nicki was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. She fought the fight bravely and won. She was 5 years past the battle when cancer reared its ugly head again. In the meantime she was actively involved in other cancer causes, most specifically Noah’s Bandage Project where she helped to organize a fundraising event in his name. She also cared deeply for the organization Jill’s Hope, an organization designed for those stricken by metastatic breast cancer. She was passionate about helping others who have been afflicted by this disease.
She succumbed peacefully to her fight with cancer on September 30th, 2020, surrounded by family. She lived her life with the belief that the most important things in this world are Faith, Hope, and Love, but the greatest of these is Love. She would always remind Sam and James to “Love ‘em while you got ‘em”, and it was her fierce love of family and friends that is an example for us all. But it was also her example of how to love a stranger as if they were your family that will forever be her legacy. The impact of her positivity and kindness will not soon be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers the family hopes that there will be donations to Jill’s Hope, a local organization that focuses on the needs of people fighting breast cancer. More importantly, we ask that you love everyone you meet the same way that Nicki did.
