Stephen was born September 28, 1936, the son of Robert and Ruby Binns, in Kansas City, Missouri, where he lived for the rest of his life. He served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960 and in the Naval Active Reserve from 1960 to 1962. At that time he began working for Merchants Delivery as a driver and furniture delivery man.

He was a gardener, a traveler, a reader of books, a skillful amateur carpenter (specializing in bookcases), and above all an enthusiastic family man. Late in life he organized food-pantry drives at his last residence, Tiffany Springs Retirement Community.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Pauline (Paula) Binns; his sons, Stephen and Robert Binns (and wife, Katherine); his grandchildren, Eric and Adam Coomes (and wife, Amanda) and Sophie and Justin Binns; and his sister, Janet (Stevens).
