

The Lord welcomed Thurlan into His loving arms on September 3, 2014. Thurlan was born Nov.16, 1916 in McClouth, Kansas to Joseph and Ruby Brenton. The family moved to N. Kansas City, Missouri in 1933. He graduated from NKCHS in 1935. He met his future wife, Helen in 1934 and married in 1939. Thurlan was a member of the First Baptist Church of NKC and was to date the longest surviving member. He and Helen were very active in the NKC Community. In his early years Thurlan was a volunteer firefighter with NKC Fire, served on the NKC Park Board and NKC Hospital Board. He served as NKC Treasurer and 12 years as a NKC City Councilman. Thurlan was active as a Boy Scout Leader with Troop 141 for many years, and a lifelong Lion’s Club Member, a member of the NKC Historical Society. Thurlan retired from Betty Rose Coats and Suits after 43 years, then volunteered with Trinity Lutheran Hospital and 26 years with Nearly New Thrift Store. Thurlan was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Helen; his parents; his son, Dennis Brenton; and 2 sisters. Survivors include 1 son, Ronnie Brenton of NKC, MO; 2 daughters, Marilyn Bouldin of LS, MO and Beverly Shryack of NKC, MO; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. Services are set for 1 PM Saturday September 6, 2014 at First Baptist Church of North Kansas City, MO, with burial to follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. The Family will receive friends from 11-1 PM at the church.
