Dawn was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Phoenix at age six. She attended Washington Elementary School, then went on the graduate from Cortez High School and Arizona State University, where she earned a bachelor’s and master’s in education. She was an avid reader and taught both English and history at Bourgade Catholic High School. For several years, she took her Bourgade students to explore Washington D.C. After that, Dawn taught at Phoenix Community College, then followed in her father’s footsteps to become an auditor for the City of Phoenix.
She was known for her striking good looks. Her pale skin contrasted with her long black curly hair and dark brown eyes. She was whip smart and had a wicked sense of humor. In high school she designed and made some of her own clothes, including a black wool coat lined in red satin that won first place in a statewide 4-H competition.
Dawn loved to travel - especially the Grand Canyon and other Arizona sites, visiting them often with her sister Donna and their parents Tom and Ruth Bockius. She also traveled several times to San Francisco and Hawaii and took her students to explore Washington D.C. Like her mother, she loved the theatre and was a life-long fancier of felines. Dawn had several close men friends over the years but chose to remain single.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law - Donna and Doug Kreutz.
Dawn and her family were charter members of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. Graveside services will be Friday, September 13, 2024 at 1:00PM at Resthaven Park Cemetery, 6450 W. Northern Avenue, Glendale (623) 939-8394.
