Doris Chavers Landry passed quietly into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 6:35am at the Chandler Health Care Center (Chandler, AZ), following a short struggle with several physical ailments. She was born Doris Shirley Chavers on April 5, 1930 to Lige and Finess (Cowan) Chavers of Natalbany, LA. She was the mother of four sons: Charles “Chuck” E. (and Jill) Landry Jr. of Mesa, AZ; H. David (and Tot) Landry of Casa Grande, AZ; L. Dwayne Landry of Peoria, AZ; and Larry F. (and Sarah) Landry of Flagstaff, AZ. She was preceded in death by both of her parents as well as three sisters: Irene Karlton, Virginia DePriest, and Octavia Owens; and four brothers Guy Albin, Hollis Chavers, Eugene Chavers and Julius Chavers. She is survived by two sisters: Imogine Argo of Decatur, GA and Beulah Andrews of Greenwell Springs, LA; as well as many grandchildren, great-grand-children and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was known as Mom, Doris, Aunt Dot, Grand-ma, G.G. and “Ethel”. In her earlier years she had worked as a cashier, tax preparer and bookkeeper (mistakenly called a “bookie” by her son Chuck in his early school days). Very early on she tried her hand at shucking oysters and deveining shrimp in Southern Louisiana but soon decided that was not for her. In later years she went back to school and at 60 years of age earned her certificate as a Nursing Assistant from Gateway Community College in Glendale, AZ and then worked as a CNA and insurance company medical examiner until 2000.
Doris is remembered for her contagious laugh which could be picked up out of a crowd… a block away and a great and lasting love for her whole family; including her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was “Mom” to many including neighborhood kids and strays. Everyone loved her great southern cooking with a heavy dose of garlic and her joy of life and fun with long-time neighbors, friends and family. In later years she always looked forward to her “little vice” of spending time with her niece (and best friend) Diane Trippe of Clearwater, FL at local casinos or in Laughlin, NV.
She came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as a young girl at Natalbany Baptist Church and remained as a Southern Baptist nearly all of her life, serving in her church through various volunteer ministries. In her last few years she attended and was a part of the fellowship at Calvary Chapel of Casa Grande.
There will be two services honoring Doris and the hope of the Resurrection. The first one will be in Louisiana on November 8 at 3:00pm at Natalbany Baptist Church, 48024 Parsonage Rd. Natalbany, LA with interment at Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. The second will be in Arizona on November 14 at 11:00am at Calvary Chapel of Casa Grande, 962 W. Gila Bend Highway, Casa Grande, AZ 85122
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to her church’s radio station KVNG – Grace 91.1FM at 962 W. Gila Bend Highway, Casa Grande, AZ 85122
