After a 2 1/2 year battle with cancer, Elizabeth Arlene Powers passed away on February 28, 2017 at the age of 62. Born in New Mexico on December 8, 1954, Arlene (as she was known to her friends) grew up in small towns across New Mexico and Texas. She made the valley her home after moving to Arizona to attend college. While working at Arizona Public Service, she met the love of her life, George, and they were married a few months later. Together, they raised three children, Claudine, Melissa, and Jonathan. Before her children got too old, Arlene decided to retire from corporate life in order to focus her full attention on her family, which shortly thereafter included her granddaughter, Taurean. During her time as a stay at home mom, Arlene displayed her many talents, performing at children’s parties as Arleenie Beenie the clown and working out of the house as a seamstress. It was after her children were grown that Arlene discovered a passion for birds and art. She began volunteering at Liberty Wildlife as a bird medic and also became an artist, making beautiful watercolors that captured her love of nature and its inhabitants. Although Arlene is no longer with us physically her compassion, joy, and love will live on through her artwork and the many lives she touched. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, March 21 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. Arlene asked that donations be made to Liberty Wildlife in lieu of flowers or gifts. Donations can be made at http://www.libertywildlife.org/how-can-i-help/make-a-donation/.
