Glenda Marie Zelfer (96) passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at Goldwater Assisted Living in Glendale, AZ where she had been a resident for nearly 10 years. Glenda was born June 1, 1923 in Burkburnett, Texas to Glen Lee Prescott and Lula (Cooper) Prescott who both preceded her in death.
She is survived by her two children, Mary Lee Zelfer Brown (Robert) of Manteca, CA and Larry Edward Zelfer (Vicki) of Glendale, AZ; four grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Leo Edward Zelfer who passed away in 1979; one grandson Mark Edward Zelfer (2000); and her sister Mary Alice Johnson (2013).
Glenda was married to Leo from 1943 until his death. They met while he was in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Glenda and Leo lived in Wichita Falls, Texas for a short time and once Leo was out of the service they moved to his home state of Kansas. They lived mostly in the Summerfield, Kansas area where they worked the farm while Mary and Larry grew up. They had many friends in Summerfield and were active in the church and community.
In 1972 they moved back to Burkburnett, Texas to be close to family. Leo passed away in Burkburnett while Glenda was working at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. She continued her employment there until 1999 and at the age of 76 retired with 25 years of service. At the age of 79 her children moved her to Arizona to be closer to them. She made her home in Sun City, AZ for eight years and then moved to a beautiful Assisted living home in Glendale after struggling with the after effects of two strokes.
Glenda was a hard worker, kind and generous with a smile that would light up the room. She loved her family and later in life when she was near them and was able to spend quality time with her great grandchildren, which gave her great pleasure.
Friends may visit on Monday, July 29, 2019, at West Resthaven Funeral Home, 6450 W Northern Ave, Glendale, AZ, from 1-2PM. Services will begin at 2PM at the same location. Interment will be in Burkburnett, Texas on August 2, 2019 at 10 AM.
