H. Lucille Dunn was born January 16, 1922 to Roy and Ellen (Stevens) Barnum in Galva, KS. The family moved to Hutchinson, KS where Lucille attended school graduating in 1940 from Hutchinson High School.
Lucille married Merle Dunn Nov. 3, 1941. Lucille followed Merle to most of his stateside army postings until he was deployed to WWII Europe. June 1945 Merle returned to his wife and daughter at their first home in Hutchinson. In 1950 they moved to Garden City where Lucille proved to be Merle’s most valuable business asset as partner and co-proprietor of Dunn Typewriter Co. In addition to her contribution to the family business Lucille also found time to lead her daughter Marjorie’s Brownie troop, participate in the PTA and serve as room mother. She also served as President of the Garden City chapter of Soroptimist International and was an active member of several other local social organizations including the Rebecca Lodge and Business Professional Women.
In 1964 the Dunns sold their business and moved to Phoenix, AZ where Merle continued to work in the office machine field until his retirement. Lucille worked at Audio Video Recorders (AVR) for 26 years. Upon her 1991 retirement Lucille relocated to her duplex/condo at Sun-Aire in Peoria, AZ where she lived directly across the street from her sister, Marjorie Barnum Paul. This arrangement provided the sisters with the opportunity to host winter visits of family and friends. The sisters also enjoyed shopping and traveling together.
Lucille moved to Emeritus at Arrowhead in Glendale, AZ in 2006 where she resided until she passed away August 5, 2014.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister and nephews Barry Paul, Gregory Paul, Richard Dunn, Bill Nelson, Zane Dunn and Theron Kelly.
Lucille is survived by her daughter Marjorie Hammer, granddaughter Andrea Hammer and two great-grandsons Steven Fuchs and Michael Fuchs all of Glendale, AZ. Also surviving are nephews Randy Paul of Chandler, AZ, George and David Dunn both of Seattle, WA, nieces Sherry Paul Johnson of Glendale, AZ, Rita Miller of St. John, KS, Beverly Root of Lyons, KS, Kandy Faske of Houston, TX, Joanita Sherman and Patrick Shepard both of Great Bend, KS and Julie Baca of CA.
Lucille was also preceded in death by dear friend and employer Floyd Ramsey, co-owner of AVR. Surviving are dearest friends Mary Ramsey (employer and co-owner of AVR), Tim Ramsey and David and Dorenda Misencik, who never forgot to visit their Lucy.
Not only was Lucille a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, she was also a formidable champion, always ready to defend those she loved. Anyone fooled by her size would soon learn otherwise.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staffs of Emeritus at Arrowhead and Hospice of the Valley. In acquiescence of Lucille’s instructions there will be no service. Memorials to Hospice of the Valley are suggested in lieu of floral tributes.
