Herbert Wallace Burns, (91), of Glendale, AZ, was born in Whiting, Iowa on July 10, 1930 to the late Roy and Anna Burns. On November 21, 2021, he was reunited with his Heavenly Father and loving wife of 70 years, Ardith.
After serving in the Air Force, he moved his family to Arizona in 1957. He enrolled in Arizona State College and, after it became Arizona State University, he was a member of the first graduating class in 1959, earning an engineering degree. Herb enjoyed his work as a civil engineer at Luke Air Force Base for 28 years and upon retirement in 1985, he then joined an international company, Parsons Brinkerhoff, as a consulting engineer for 12 years. This gave him an opportunity for many unique travel experiences, often accompanied by his wife.
Some of his favorite community service was as a Boy Scout Master for Troop 669. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Distinguished Service Award in 1979. It is the most prestigious award the Boy Scouts of America present for volunteer service to members who have positively impacted the lives of youth. He was also in charge of an Explorer Post and organized the annual Scout-a-Rama at the state fairgrounds for three years.
Herb was the ultimate host. He and Ardy loved hosting parties and had a tight bond with his neighbors who remained close, valued friends forever.
He will always be remembered by his son, Dr. Steven D. Burns, O.D. and his wife, Deborah; his daughter Lynn Burns; three granddaughters, Darsey, (Todd), Stacy, (T.J.), and Lency, (Max); along with their families, which include seven great grandchildren.
A small graveside service for family and close friends will be held on December 10, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at West Resthaven Park Cemetery in Glendale, AZ, followed by an open house visitation at his home. Please join us in celebrating his life.
