James Joseph Coury, 90, of Phoenix AZ, passed away on September 3, 2019 (affectionally know as Jim). He served on active duty in the United States Navy as an Electricians Mate Fireman First Class from June 1946 to May 1948, Re-activated during the Korean Conflict to Active Duty October 1950 to February 1952. His assignments included Naval Training Center Great Lakes, IL., USS Kearsarge CV-33, USS Midway CVB-41 USS Siboney CVE-12. His awards included the World War II Victory Medal. He received his Barber license in Detroit, MI, where he owned a Barbershop at the Leland Hotel. Jim was well-known for telling his family fun stories of all the famous people who sat in his chair and received haircuts, including some of the Detroit Tiger baseball team. Jim moved to Arizona in 1978, where he worked at Turf Paradise Racetrack for over 30 years. His outgoing personality allowed him to make many friends and acquaintances over the years.
Jim is preceded in death by his mother Nellie Coury; brothers Mike Haddad and George Coury; and sisters, Elizabeth Campbell and Anne Coury. He is survived by his sister, Amelia Roose; three nieces; seven nephews; and the rest of his extended family included great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends he made over his 90 years. Family was the most valuable thing in his life and he will be truly missed.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 4-8pm, with a Rosary at 7pm at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary 7924 N. 59th Ave, Glendale, Arizona. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at 10am at St. Louis the King Catholic Church 4331 W. Maryland Ave Glendale, Arizona. A committal will follow the at Resthaven Park Cemetery 6450 W. Northern Ave, Glendale, Arizona.
