James Robert Smith, 86, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on February 20, 2026. Born April 10, 1939, James lived a full life marked by devoted love for family, steady purpose, and the kind of presence that stays with those who knew him.
In his younger days, James enjoyed camping and panning for gold, finding simple satisfaction in the outdoors and the quiet rewards of time well spent.
A devoted and family-centered man, James loved gardening and spending time with his family. He was also known for his quick wit and sense of humor, and he delighted in pranking friends and family—always leaving behind laughter and stories that will be retold for years to come. An amazing carpenter, he helped to build Sun City, leaving a lasting mark through skilled hands and honest work.
James was never far from the love of his life, Carol J. Smith. He is survived by his wife, Carol J. Smith; his children, Audrey Horton (Todd), Jerry Davis, and Regina Nugent (Sean); and his grandchildren, Amanda Lewis, Sarah Schmittgens, Kyle Moore, Samuel Moore, Melissa Garcia, Delaney Noon, Brett Davis, and Missy Davis. He is also survived by 14 great grandchildren; his brother, Donald Ray Smith (Vivian); and several nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents, John Edwin Smith and Audrey Corrine Parker; his sisters, Martha Ann Armstrong and Mary Sue Shanaberger; and his brothers, Charles Parker, Paul LeRoy, John Edwin, Thomas Wayne, and Richard Dale.
There will be a very small ceremony and interment at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, with a celebration of life to be planned in the future.
