

John Oliver Widener, 77, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on November 19, 2023. He was born on October 10, 1946, in Saltville, Virginia. John, known to his loved ones as Johnny, will be fondly remembered for his passion for learning and his adventurous spirit.
John is preceded in death by his mother and father, as well as his first wife, Mary Ellen. John and Mary had two sons and were blessed with two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild, two step grandchildren, two step great grandchildren, all who cherished him deeply. John has one loving sister who still resides in Virginia. He later remarried to Linda Markum, mother of two sons, all who continue to love him deeply.
Throughout his life, John pursued knowledge and was a lifelong learner. He had a curious nature and enjoyed exploring new places. An avid traveler, he ventured far and wide, always seeking new experiences.
John enjoyed the outdoors, including hiking, fishing, and hunting with his sons. He had a deep passion for cars, particularly German automobiles and he took great pleasure in owning and driving them, sometimes too quickly, and sometimes too slowly. He followed Formula One racing and motorcycle racing. Nature photography was another hobby that brought him joy, even if most of his subjects were inanimate objects. In his retirement, he traveled to various places, with a particular fondness for the Alberta area in Canada. John also stayed active by participating in 5Ks, half and full marathons, and trail runs alongside his two sons.
In terms of education, John attended Phoenix College and the University of Phoenix where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He had a successful career of 30+ years with Maricopa County Wireless Systems in Phoenix, Arizona. Early in his career John owned and operated a TV repair shop in Virginia. Prior to that he worked for General Telephone and Electronics Company in Indiana.
A Celebration of Life and viewing for John will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at the Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary, located at 7924 N. 59th Ave. Glendale, AZ 85301. Visitation will take place from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by the Celebration of Life Services from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. A reception will follow from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
In memory of John Widener, contributions can be made to organizations that support the Appalachian communities such as Christian Appalachian Project, a cause that was close to his heart.
The funeral arrangements are being handled by the Chapel of the Chimes in Glendale, Arizona. May he rest in peace.
