Kurt was born on July 18, 1956 in Casa Grande, AZ, son of Leo Erick Koivisto and Pearl Josephine Bowie. Kurt graduated from Maryvale High School in 1974, and completed his Associates Degree at Glendale Community College.
He was a cherished, long time scout leader and troop leader for the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 365. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow. Kurt led many young men on outdoor retreats, including his two sons, Alan and Chris, and to earning their Eagle Scout Rank. He retired as a 34 year employee of the Phoenix Union High School District, where he worked in the DSF as an equipment mechanic and warehouseman. He loved Phoenix Union High School District: the staff, the students, and the schools who support the many communities of the district. He was a member of the Christ Church of the Valley. Kurt loved to enjoy his free time fishing, camping, and walking his dogs. Kurt was an avid backgammon player, and loved to play games with his family.
Preceding Kurt in death are his parents, Leo and Pearl, his brother Erick, his brother Ron, and his sister Jeri Nuss. He is survived by his sons, Alan Joseph Koivisto (Hannah), Christopher Lawrence Koivisto (Kayloni), former wife Janice Lea Grim Koivisto, his sisters, Karla Fernwault (Charlie), and Kristi Koziol. In addition, he is mourned by sisters-in-law Eleanor Koivisto (Ron) and Julie Pinney (Jonathan), as well as his brother-in-law, Mel Nuss. He was “Uncle Kurt” to many nieces and nephews both in the Valley and far away.
