Shirley Margaret Peebles was born May 15, 1925 in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Russell Sage Peebles and Margaret (Howell) Peebles. Shirley never married. Her parents were of Welsh extraction, of which Shirley was modestly proud.
She graduated from Elementary and High School in Pennsylvania. She and her parents moved to Phoenix in 1943, immediately after her High School graduation. She then graduated from Phoenix College with a BA degree in 1947. Shirley worked in the West High School Office before moving to the Phoenix Union High School District Office, where she was the Attendance Residence Specialist; a position that she held for 33-1/2 years.
Shirley liked classical music, and she took Soprano opera lessons (insisted on by her mother) as a teenager. She also liked band music from the “Swing Era”, Harry James, Benny Goodman, etc. with a large collection of vinyl records, and cassette tapes. Shirley was an avid Bible student, and had read and re-read the whole Bible at least seven times. She taught Sunday School to our youth for many years, and participated in a small group study for over twenty years. She also studied the Jewish religious customs and was pleased to be considered an “authority” on the Old Testament customs. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved brother Russell.
