John Kurre

John Kurre, of Ridgewood, NY passed away on December 3, 2023, at the age of 92. A native of Graflinden, Gottschee, he was the devoted husband of Maria Kurre, whom he survived by 14 years. He was the brother of Frank, Ernest, Edward, Lilli, Hildegard, and Maria(deceased). He is also survived by his two children John Edward and Maria, daughter-in-law, Chris, and grandchildren, Katherine Kurre, Christopher Sinacori, and Zachary Kurre.

John Kurre left Gottschee in his youth and lived in Leoben, Austria. From the age of 15, he worked to help support his family after his father passed away, which left his mother a young widow with 7 children. He worked various jobs in Austria before he emigrated to the United States in 1955. He helped to pave the way for the rest of his family and settled in New York where met his wife, Maria Panter. In 1957, they wed, started their family, and worked hard to provide a good life for their children. In his free time, John enjoyed being with his family and traveling to visit Maria’s sisters, Mathilde and Theresa in first Ohio and then Arizona as well as many Gottscheer Treffens over the years. He also was a longtime member of the Gottscheer bowling club and spent time golfing and traveling with his siblings and friends in his early retirement. He enjoyed cooking as well as baking and was dedicated to his wife, whom he took care of before she passed away in 2009. He loved and supported his family and was proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments.

A visitation for John will be held Friday, December 8, 2023, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Werst & LaBella Funeral Home, 71-41 Cooper Ave, Glendale, NY 11385. Funeral service will occur Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 9:45 AM to 10:30 AM at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Roman Catholic Church, 62-81 60th Pl,, maspeth, NY 11385. Committal service will occur Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at St. Charles/Resurrection Cemeteries, 2015 Wellwood Avenue, West Babylon, NY 11735.
