

John was born on January 5, 1969 to Carol Zwerenz (née Stene) of Brooklyn, NY and the late Jack Zwerenz of Glendale, NY. A well-known community activist, who passed in 2019. John spoke proudly on his father’s behalf at a 2020 honorary street dedication ceremony where his childhood block on 82nd and Myrtle Avenue was co-named “Jack Zwerenz Way”. John grew up there along with his sister, Jeannie DeVarso.
John was a brilliant poet, author and journalist. He took to writing poetry in high school and graduated with honors from Queen’s College in 1992. His creative genius spanned multiple genres, resulting in a remarkable collection of poetry books, novels, and novellas. A significant number of his books were published, showcasing his writing prowess.
John took a keen interest in music from a very early age, and was a talented singer, songwriter and was proficient in all instruments. He was an exuberant and charismatic performer who performed in many venues over the years, both with his former band “The Edge” and solo acts. As a prolific songwriter and recording artist, he created an impressive library of music, spanning multiple albums.
With a keen mind and quick wit, he was a master of historical context. His humor was infectious, able to light up a room with laughter. He had a remarkable ability to find humor in even the most mundane situations. John was a devout Catholic. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, with a deep reverence for the Virgin Mary. He designed a serene oasis in his backyard, featuring religious statues and soothing fountains.
John was deeply loved by many, especially his family. He was blessed with a loving family, including his brother-in-law Jonathan and beloved niece and nephew, Jessica and Connor.
John’s story was one of triumph and tragedy, as mental illness played a complex role in his life and passing.
A graveside service will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at St John’s Cemetery, 6601 80th St, New York, NY 11379.
A memorial mass to honor John will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 83-17 78th Ave, New York, NY 11385.
