Born on November 3, 1942, in Columbus, Ohio, Alice was the daughter of the late Allan F. Eddy, Sr. and Bernice Saal Eddy. She later made her home in Gonzales, Louisiana, where she lived independently and fully—right up until the very end.
For being “elderly” (and she would have laughed at the term), Alice was as healthy as a horse—sharp as a tack, fiercely independent, and entirely herself. She continued working part-time, handled every detail of her own life, lived alone, drove herself everywhere, and never lost her wit, her opinions, or her competitive edge—especially when it came to Words With Friends, where she continued to hand out defeats regularly. Her age never dulled her mind, her memory, or her spirit. She noticed everything, remembered everything, and remained quick, capable, and fully present until she wasn’t anymore—and that is exactly how she would have wanted it.
Alice was a graduate of Baton Rouge High School and worked for many years as a Material Control Coordinator with The Shaw Group. She later served as a Notary Public, a role that suited her precision, intelligence, and attention to detail.
She was a voracious reader, with a particular love for true crime, ancient history, archaeology, and anything related to the Tudor period. A gifted wordsmith, she loved Scrabble and Words With Friends, enjoyed cruising—especially with Orville—and cherished fishing trips at the camp. She embraced learning, curiosity, and conversation throughout her life.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Edith Stultz; her brothers, Danny Eddy and Rodney Herron; and the love of her life, Orville Hebermehl.
She is survived by her children: daughters Nita H. Poland, Dana H. Jarreau (Kevin), Lori Van Bemmelen (Todd) and her son, Brian Keith Hunter (Dana Kaye). She also leaves behind her sister, Bettye R. Wallace; her sister-in-law, Dorlis Herron; and her brothers, Allan F. Eddy, Jr. and William Eddy.
Alice was a proud grandmother to sixteen grandchildren: Ryan J. Hunter (Katie), Ashley M. Hunter, Kyle G. Nugent, Evan M. Nugent, Tori L. Nugent, Jase T. Nugent, Chad M. Poland, Kristyn L. Poland, Keleigh E. Poland, Jaime L. Poland, Cameron M. Jarreau (Ashley), Reide J. Perck (Clint), Chase A. Jarreau, Brittney E. Lopez (Jared), Celia D. Hollywood (Kreg), and Samuel M. Diamond.
She was also blessed with thirteen great-grandchildren: Cooper, Kirby, Myles, Grace, Aldin, Remy, Emersyn, Allie, Avery, Clinton, Leo, Beth, and Reese.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to her best friend, Robert Hatchell, and his girls Sydnie, Saydie, and Sylvie, for the love and friendship they shared with Alice. Heartfelt gratitude is also extended to Drs. Giarrusso and Trevino and registered nurse Helen at St. Elizabeth Hospital, as well as Dr. Bourgeois and registered nurse Kelsey at Our Lady of the Lake ICU, for their compassionate care.
Alice did not simply grow older—she lived. With strength. With independence. With dignity. And she remained wholly, unmistakably herself until the very last moment.
